  • Hit Series Stars Blake Anderson, Adam Devine, and Anders Holm and is Directed by Mail Order Comedy’s Kyle Newacheck
  • Fourth Season is #1 Show in All of Television in Its Timeslot among Men 18-24 and Men 18-34

Comedy Central has doubled down on the hit series “Workaholics“ as the all-comedy network locks in a sixth and a seventh season, it was announced today by Kent Alterman, President, Original Programming, Comedy Central. Ten episodes have been ordered for each season and new episodes of the hit series from Blake Anderson, Adam Devine, Anders Holm and Kyle Newacheck begin in January.

“I remember when the title of this show was ironic,” said Alterman.

A favorite among young men, the fourth season of “Workaholics” was the highest-rated series in its timeslot across all of television among Men 18-34 and Men 18-24. The series also consistently ranked in the Top Five of the Nielsen Twitter TV Ratings for comedies on Wednesdays and has over two million fans on Facebook.

“Workaholics” is a single-camera comedy featuring three friends who work together from 9 to 5, live together from 5 to 9 and party together 24/7. Dress codes, deadlines and waking up before noon are not things these guys are used to. They do their jobs and sometimes they even do them well, but they show up late, leave drunk and always live for the day…even if they don’t know what day it is.

“Workaholics” was co-created by Mail Order Comedy’s Blake Anderson, Adam Devine, Anders Holm and Kyle Newacheck. The series stars Anderson, Devine and Holm and is directed by Newacheck. Executive Producers include Mail Order Comedy, Kevin Etten, Avalon Television’s Richard Allen-Turner, David Martin, Jon Thoday and Isaac Horne. “SOUTH PARK” RENEWED THROUGH A HISTORIC 23RD SEASON, MAKES NEW DEAL WITH CC

  • Agreement Extends Cable’s Longest-Running Primetime Scripted Series By Three Seasons and 30 Episodes and Will Take “South Park” Through Its Milestone 300th Episode
  • Hulu to Maintain Rights to New Seasons and Episodes and Remain Only SVOD Home for Current 254-Episode “South Park” Library
  • 19th Season Premieres Wednesday, September 16

Trey Parker and Matt Stone have reached a new deal with Comedy Central® to extend “South Park” by three seasons and 30 episodes, taking the longest-running prime time scripted series in cable though an unprecedented 23rd season and 304 episodes. The deal for three additional seasons, announced today by Michele Ganeless, President, Comedy Central, ensures the Emmy® and Peabody® Award-winning series will continue to produce new, original episodes through 2019. Parker and Stone will continue to write, direct and edit every episode of “South Park,” as they have since the premiere of the series in 1997. The 19thseason of “South Park” premieres on Wednesday, September 16.

In a separate deal, South Park Digital Studios, a joint venture between Parker, Stone and Viacom, has extended its record-breaking deal with Hulu to cover all additional seasons and new episodes. Hulu is the exclusive streaming home of the entire “South Park” library of 18 seasons and 254 episodes and will also remain the SVOD home to all episodes from upcoming seasons.

“Nearly two decades later, ‘South Park’ today remains as important and influential as any series on any platform and has become one of the most recognizable brands to ever come out of television,” said Doug Herzog, President, Viacom Music & Entertainment Group. “Through South Park Digital Studios we will continue to aggressively expand the reach of the ‘South Park’ brand by pursuing additional extensions and licensing opportunities worldwide.”

“‘South Park’ remains the bedrock of Comedy Central and we are thrilled that new episodes will continue to entertain audiences for years to come,” said Ganeless. “The series remains as urgent and relevant now as the day it premiered and at nearly 20 seasons in it continues to draw generations of new fans.”

Said Parker and Stone: “We love working for Doug and with everyone at Comedy Central. They’ve given us an insane level of artistic and creative freedom for almost 20 years. They walk the walk.”

Named “One of the All-Time Greatest TV Shows” by Entertainment Weekly and one of the “All-TIME 100 TV Shows” by TIME, “South Park,” which premieres its 19th season on September 16, was the top-rated comedy series on cable in 2014 among Adults 18-49 and Men 18-34 and was the #1-rated series in primetime across all of television on Wednesdays during its 18th season with Men 18-34 and Men 18-24.

The incredible popularity of “South Park” extends off the television screen with over 46 million fans on Facebook, making it the most-popular cable comedy series on Facebook and one of the Top 10 series in all of television. With over 1.7 million followers, “South Park” is one of the top scripted television series on Twitter and it has ranked #1 or #2 for Comedy Series by Nielsen Social Guide on its premiere nights during the course of its past season. In addition, the series’ award-winning game, “South Park: The Stick of Truth,” which was released last year, received numerous industry awards and a Metacritic rating of 85. A sequel, “South Park: The Fractured but Whole,” was announced earlier this month by Ubisoft® and South Park Digital Studios.

Co-created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, “South Park” premiered on August 13, 1997. Parker, Stone, Anne Garefino and Frank C. Agnone II are the Executive Producers of the Emmy® and Peabody® Award-winning series. Eric Stough, Adrien Beard, Bruce Howell and Vernon Chatman are Producers. Past episodes can be streamed at “South Park’s” website (southpark.cc.com) as well as the Comedy Central App. The complete, 18-season, 254-episode library is available only on Hulu (subscription required).

The agreement with Comedy Central was negotiated for Parker and Stone by their attorney Kevin Morris.

Netflix in June : A review

In this post, I will review (some) added shows and movies on Netflix for the month of June. What you should watch and what you can avoid.

MOVIES:

  • CAKE:

I was really excited to see this movie because of the many appraisal it received concerning Jennifer Aniston’s performance. Of course I loved her in Friends, and then she sort of disappointed me with a lot of not so good, dumb movies, with a few exceptions. She became mostly known for roles in what I call heavy comedies, that are hard to digest, where most of the humor revolves around poop, falling, farts, burps and so on..

Cake is not a great movie. The premise is pretty interesting though: A woman, Claire, played by Jennifer Aniston, becomes obsessed with a young woman ( Anna Kendrick)  from her chronic pain support group that has recently committed suicide as she has to overcome her own difficulties.

***Spoiler alert

Claire, we learn, has had a horrible car accident that has left her in constant pain and handicapped, but most horribly, that killed her young son. Her refusal to deal with the pain eventually also led to her separation from her husband. And that’s where we are.  She is mean, angry, in pain, addicted to painkillers and incapable of dealing with her emotions. She is trying to shut everyone out of her life, and has successfully done so, apart from Silvana, her maid, that is trying to help and protect her, even taking a lot of risks doing so.

Claire becomes obsessed with this young woman, Nina, from her support group that committed suicide and has many visions involving her (although stopping the mix wine/ pain killers might be a good idea for it to stop). Claire decides to know more about her life and a strange relationship blossoms between her and Nina’s late husband. They are both desperately hanging on to life but he is doing so in a much more grounded way, he has not given up on life, mainly due to his young son. He tries to help Claire as much as he can and both give each other hope of a better tomorrow. Of course the parallel is obvious between the two women. One killed herself and left her son and husband grieving for her. The other had her son killed in a car accident and was left by her husband. What are Claire’s reasons to wake up every morning? What has she left to live for?

The story deals with grief, hope and love but in such a way that we are not sure what the film is trying to convey. There is no clear direction in the movie and we are left wondering where this is headed.

There are a lot (too many) shots of Claire in her bed, hallucinating and in pain. The shots involving Nina are a bit cliché, she is dressed perfectly, talks with a smooth voice. Some of the narratives are not subtle, like the whole metaphor of the cake with the introduction of a runaway teenager that does not add anything to the story.

Sure the acting is pretty solid from Jennifer Anniston, but I would not say it is mind blowing. Why is it that every time a story involves some kind of tragic past and/or physical alterations from glamour criteria ( loss of weight, gain of weight, shaving head, scars etc..) people judge it as great acting and expect an Oscar nomination? The movie has to be great, the character has to be deep and complex. In that case the characters are a bit too cliché and are not very well established.  Their complexity is not understood. The movie does not work very well.

  • Beyond the lights

This movie as everything a good romantic Drama should have : beautiful people, true love, obstacles, and drama.

The movie is about a pop star, Noni, with a controlling manager/mother, who is on the verge of becoming a huge star. She meets Kaz, a boy with a good heart and strong principles that is about to enter politics. Their world could not be further apart and their relationship would hurt both of their careers.

This movie is about the star system, about what sells and what does not. It is about a lot of today’s singers in a way, how they are manipulated, marketed, sexualized to sell, sell, sell. It does not matter if they feel comfortable in that persona labels create for them, or if they are happy. People have to believe they are, they have to sell the American dream, the illusion.

Noni meets Kaz, someone that truly cares about her for the first time and her principles evolve, which, no surprise here, does not please the many investors in her career.

Kaz also represents the hypocrisy of the political system. It is not good for his campaign to be seen with a pop star, it would show him as someone looking for fame, someone that enjoys drama when in fact he is a grounded, good hearted person, in love and trying to help the person he loves. People are labeled and both words despise each other.

Sure there are moments that are a bit soapy but I thought this would be a bad romantic drama and  it proved out to be a really entertaining movie, touching on a lot of subjects and allowing a (brief) look in the backstage of fame and politics, with the final message being to accept yourself for who you are ( which is always a nice message to convey).

  • THE BEST OF ME

I was not expecting much when I started this movie but I still was shocked by how bad this was. It is horribly bad. It is basically about two persons that haven’t moved on since they were 17 after what seems like 3 months of romance.

They are so stuck in the past, which would be fine if the movie showed the pathetic aspect of it but no, it is somehow seen like a really good thing. Everything about it is really dull.

They admit they still love each other after having talked for 10 minutes total, about 20 years after their teenage fling.

Using very subtle flashbacks to their teenage years (where the guy actor looks nothing like the older one, apparently people shrink with age) It tries to involve drama. The main guy (I don’t even remember his name, let’s call him lover boy) has a horrible family he tries to escape from but they really want him bad and are ready to kill for that (for whatever reasons..). There is a semi- violent scene and his best friend is killed after a fight. Lover boy goes to prison (along with his father) and of course, teenage girl is in love and says she will wait for him. But he breaks it off (duh) because, obviously, she is not going to wait like 8 years for him to get out.

But apparently, even though she has “moved on” in the meantime, and has had 3 kids (not out of love is an understatement), she is still pissed at him for breaking it off 20 years later because « she would have waited for him ». This is just ridiculous.

The bad guys are still there, and still pissed at lover boy, who is truly too nice to be trusted. And guess what? The bad guys are bad like really really bad, they’re the scar of the Lion King, even though their end game is never really clear (guess they are really dumb too).

So in the end, SPOILER ALERT, Guess what? They kill lover boy at the same time lover girl’s son has an accident and I kid you not, lover boy’s heart saves lover girl’s son. So basically, her lover’s heart now is inside her son, creepy right?

I mean this movie is so bad, the characters are such cliché; it feels like it was made by a 10 year old because life is simple and true love is eternal. I understand why they kill him off in the end because should they have started really being together, I wonder how long it could have lasted given the fact that they barely know each other and that all they talk about, and have in common is their 3 month romance when they were kids. But seriously, dialogues are bad, characters are bad, just stay away.

  • NIGHTCRAWLER :

This movie is very hard to review for me. I admit it is an exceptionally well-filmed movie, every shot is just pure and jaw droopingly beautiful. The character Lou Bloom, played by Jake Gyllenhaal is mesmerizing and the dialogues are poignant. The music is just right.

However, this is not my kind of movie. It reminded me of Drive in its amazing direction but I just do not really fall in love with those kind of movies. I think, after a little soul searching, that I am just too much a fan of dialogues, of knowing he complexity and self awareness of characters.

This movie is about a « reporter », or more precisely a man, with a camera that films local news but is not afraid to go further than anyone else. He will trespass scene crimes, break the law and even create drama himself, in order to get the best ( aka the goriest, most violent) shots.

This film is definitely a critic of today’s voyeurism, especially in the news, with more and more crude and disturbing images being broadcasted. It is a critic of our society that likes it, that always ask for more of it. People are so curious about death, about violence; think about how many people tried to see the corpses or the injured when an accident took place near you, and even you wanted to see as well. I do not know if it is part of our nature, because we wonder about death, or something that has been reinforced due to us being accustomed of seeing those images on the news. Anyways, today, these are the « money shots ».

But the movie is not only about that, it is most and foremost about Lou Bloom, someone that appears to everyone like a great worker, even sympathetic, reaching for the stars, making his own luck ( an American dream embodiment) that is ultimately a manipulative, vicious person, devoid of any empathy.

The camera follows him without making us empathize with his character, and we are able to condemn his actions and judge him very easily, distancing ourselves from such a horrible person. But the truth is, how horrible is he? and how horrible are we if we condemn the means but not the finality, if we watch his images and ask for more?

This emphasizes the paradox we are in concerning most things in the world today, we condemn child labor and exploitation but still buy 5 dollars shirt. We condemn global warming but still do not take our own bags to the grocery store and so on.

The movie is truly a piece of art so I would recommend it, even though, as I stated before, this is not a movie that really touched my sensitivity. Characters that are too distant, storylines that are too distant, and therefore when I have a hard time identifying in the story tends to just affect me less. But that’s just me.

TV SHOWS:

  • Orange Is The New Black

Yes! Orange Is The New Black is back and it is so so good!!

The second season had disappointed me a little but this season was really great. It incorporated much more background on the characters and they became way more complex.

The first episode really sets the tone; the show had previously been criticized for not showing enough the reality of female imprisonment and the strain on family that prison results in, especially for the mothers imprisoned, not being able to have their children visit due to different constraints. This season treated much more about motherhood, being afraid for one’s child’s development, being afraid to be a bad mother or a bad example. It deals with a lot of different aspects of motherhood: Dayanara and her concerns for her unborn child, Gloria and Sophia that are facing their rebellious teenagers, Jessica that has a forced separation with her child or even Pennsatucky dealing with her abortions. All of this added so much humanity to their characters and we really understood how powerless those women are in situations that directly affect them. The gang war is more or less over, leaving them with more time to actually think about the outside world and what awaits them.

The flashbacks were amazing, giving us so much more insights as to who the characters are- especially the one about Pennsatucky that was heart breaking.

There is also more solidarity within the prison, old hatches have been buried and all seem very eager to look forward, to be better and do better. All, except for Piper who becomes more and more attached to the prison. She feels like she has finally found herself, and she is not a nice girl anymore. Shocker, Alex is actually the one trying to stay out of trouble and that ultimately leads to a feud between them.

Prisoners are looking for hope and a cult starts, under the presidency of Morna.

There is also a lot of backstory into the guards, the prison system, with Caputo doing everything he can to keep the prison afloat, without ever being thanked for it.

This season depicted much more all the weaknesses, faults and contradictions of the whole prison system. It showed us the limits of the system, a system that is a capitalistic system after all, lead by money, lead by people with their own ego ( like when the one counselor that actually manages to create trust with the prisoners is fired over Healy’s ego), lead by unqualified people. A lot of the episodes directly demonstrated the numerous pitfalls in the prison system, inability to deal with addiction, inability to counsel adequately and to listen, inability to treat the prisoners like human being even.

This season was really a lot more about empathizing with the characters; it was about showing them as human, complex people and created much more occasions to relate to them. This season was about change, redemption and hope. Not to say that there was not drama and humor, it is still hilarious and a dangerous trigger to binge watching behaviors.

If all of that isn’t enough, watch it at least to get the whole buzz about the latest addition to the cast, Ruby Rose.

Comedy Central’s new animated series follows Dazzle Novak (voiced by Rob Lowe), a handsome, idiotic detective who commits more crimes than most criminals. His sexy, tyrannical chief Pizzaz Miller (Elizabeth Banks) won’t get off his back. His obnoxious rival Rad Cunningham (Will Forte) will stop at nothing to destroy him. Dazzle must team up with the city’s only competent police officer, Chrysalis Tate (Kate Mara), to protect their beloved, neon-soaked metropolis. “Moonbeam City” premieres on Wednesday, September 16 at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT following the 19th season premiere of “South Park.” The panel will be moderated by Scott Aukerman and include series star and Producer Rob Lowe, series creator and Executive Producer Scott Gairdner, Executive Producer Tommy Blacha and Executive Producer Richie Schwartz.

6:00-6:45 p.m. Come learn about the history of “Drunk History!” Derek Waters (co-creator, host, Director) and Jeremy Konner (co-creator, Director) will walk fans through how this historically accurate, yet slightly slurred show, works to portray little-known events and figures in history from the perspective of an intoxicated narrator. From humble beginnings as a digital series to two seasons on Comedy Central, with the third season set to premiere on September 1 at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT, Derek and Jeremy have plenty of stories to tell about the making of the show. Tompkins and includes Derek Waters, Jeremy Konner, SNL’s Taran Killam (who has guest starred on all three seasons of the show) and series recurring guest star Paget Brewster.

  • 6:45-7:30 p.m. The party continues with “Another Period,” the original out of touch reality family in this turn-of-the-century historical and satirical scripted series that follows the insanely ridiculous and debaucherous life of the Bellacourts, who have more servants than relatives and whose days are filled with money, sex, drugs and more money. “Another Period” is co-created by Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome, executive produced by Ben Stiller’s Red Hour and airs Tuesdays at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT. Mr. Robot | Pilot (4/4)

The Official Trailer for 'Mr. Robot' on USA. New Episodes Wednesdays at 10/9c. " Subscribe to Mr. Robot: http://po.st/PAiNAW " Watch Full Episodes here: http://po.st/kCDlYE About: MR. ROBOT is a psychological thriller that follows Elliot (Rami Malek, "24"), a young programmer, who works as a cyber security engineer by day and a vigilante hacker by night.

I have to say it again, TV in US is doing really good. The variety and quality of shows available is just amazing. Seems we may have to add another one on the list, coming from USA - Mr. Robot.

The name does not give you much, except that it should be a sci-fi show about a humanoid or robotic creature, who's probably the lead protagonist/antagonist, either saving or destroying the world. Most probably saving, and struggling with his new found emotions towards humanity... HOLD ON. The show has nothing to do with any of that. At least not so far. It's actually a show about the digital world that we lead in, how computers and internet affect every aspect of our lives. And a lowly and ordinary software hacker, who's also kinda crazy, is just doing his best to survive.

***spoilers***

The series follows Elliot (Rami Malek), a young cyber security engineer by day and a vigilante hacker by night. He hates his job and hates even more the company he's supporting in his job, called E Corp aka Evil Corp (Apple? Google? Microsoft? Doubt it can be Microsoft anymore) suffers from a severe case of social anxiety disorder but connects to people by hacking them. That includes his co-worker and childhood friend Angela Moss, whose boyfriend he hates for being a cheater and retarded. The scene between him and the boyfriend is hilarious, specially when Elliot says "i'm okay with thing being weird between us". That also includes his therapist Krista Gordon, who's recently divorced and into dating losers, which Elliot has a problem with, and wants to protect her. The scenes between them are also quite intriguing, specially his inner monologues.

Elliot finds himself at a crossroads when a mysterious anarchist Mr. Robot (Christian Slater), who's hobo by the night and hacker by the day, recruits Elliot. The show follows his attempts to recruit him to destroy the E Corp, which he is paid to protect. Compelled by his personal beliefs, Elliot struggles to resist the chance to take down the multinational CEOs he believes are running (and ruining) the world. He does end up following his belief and helping to destroy the CTO of E Corp, although Mr. Robot and his group seems to be disappeared. But right at the end of the pilot, he's escorted into a room of suited folks, being lead by one of the VPs of E Corp, he met earlier. Are these the folks he's been worried about? Who actually is Mr. Robot? Is this all real or just Elliot's imagination?

***spoiler ends***

The show has some great performances but Sami Malek takes the limelight. From his inner monologues, to anxieties, to people interaction, everything is either hilarious or pretty serious. And he does great job of it too. Christian Slater did not have a lot of screen presence, but was pretty good and has an interesting role, it seems. The focus has been on Elliot's character so far, which is obvious, but show can take some good turns. Gloria Reuben as the therapist has quite an interesting role. One of my friends Smarat Chakrabarty was also in as Ron, and had a great performance in a short role.

There's some great writing and amazing monologues and dialogues on the show. Makes it more fun to watch. As far as cinematography is concerned, it's great. Scenes in Manhattan, Subway and Cony Island look very NYC. The hacking aspect seems pretty realistic for an average audience, not sure if true hackers will agree though. It does bring some real concerns about cyber security and how the internet and social media impacts our every day lives. The show also has some pretty strong and clear opinions about people, things and events, like George Bush, Neil Armstrong, Bill Cosby, Transformers-2, facebook etc.

Anyways, it seems an interesting and great start to possibly a great show. I'm looking forward for more.

@GameOfThrones | Mother's Mercy (4/4)

I know, I'm a week late. But I didn't get time to watch the season 5 finale, until now. And was it crazy? It was!

***spoilers***

Jon Snow's dead? I'm not honestly sure. Although there was lot of blood. But he didn't get decapitated. Plus, Melisandre is back. So, she might revive him? Or will she revive Stannis? Although, he didn't get decapitated either. Just a flung sword, but we didn't see more. So, he may not be dead either. I'm not trusting GOT, but we know that anyone can die (except Daenerys & Tyrion, I think) in GOT. But still, Jon Snow's murder was a HUGE shocker. I did not expect that, I did not see it coming. He was finally seeming less mopey and more fun. Specially after last episode where he killed a White Walker. I mean, c'mon, why kill him now? WHY?

The other shocker for me was "Cersei's Walk of Shame". I didn't expect that either. Not that brutal. Even though most of us pretty much hate her, we still felt bad. That's good writing, good acting, good direction and good character development. Good Job!... But these guys are F*ed now. She won't leave them. I'm just wondering what kinda brutal death she has in mind from them. Atterall "The Mountain" is back and he's upgraded to version-2.

Rest of the things were quite expected, but still leave BIG cliffhangers... Daenerys is back with Dothrakis. Isn't she still the Khaleesi? It should work out, right? Else there's always the sleepy dragon, Drogon. And we are all happy about Tyrion taking over Mereen. And with Varys back, it's going to be awesome!

I'm not sure how to feel about Myrcella's death. The father-daughter scene was interesting, but lasted like 5 seconds. Although, they should have never trusted the Sands... Finally Theon woke-up from being Reek, but seems he thinks of himself as Superman now. He plans on jumping off the Fort wall with Sansa and flying off? Or just end up with shattered knees and broken legs, to crawl out of Winterfell? We will see...

And I really don't care about Arya getting blind. Although her killing of Trant was cool. He deserved and she deserved it too. To kill him and get blind, both. You can't be slapping faces on and not listening to "no one".

****spoliers end***

So the episode was interesting and fun. Yet again, great performances and amazing cinematography. I can't wait for season-6 already. I know we have to, and I'm waiting already!

Good Bye Letterman... we miss you already!

David Letterman's final broadcast...

Wednesday 20th May 2015 transformed into a national event: David Letterman aired his final broadcast of The Late Show. The audience and orchestra (directed by Paul Shaffer) of the Ed Sullivan Theatre saluted the great CBS host after 33 years, six thousand episodes and 19,932 guests.

More than three decades of television history are tough to summarize, through the chameleonic and caustic humour of Letterman. Innumerable are the memorable moments on his show, as his flirts (like the 1995 interview with Drew Barrymore), or his nasty feuds who saw celebrities tangled in Dave’s sharp tongue (like the 16 year altercation with Oprah Winfrey). He displayed great comedic charisma, but was just as effective in reporting hard news, as attested by the emotional speech he delivered on his first show after 9/11. He could be friendly or grill his interviewees, as he did with Paris Hilton asking her about her permanence in jail, or when he gave a rough time to prima-donnas such as Madonna or Joaquin Phoenix. He had moments of bravery, when he admitted to adultery with women of his staff, or when he gave details of an extortion attempt against him.

The last show was truly heartfelt by the whole nation and the entire world. Celebrities (Alec Baldwin, Barbara Walters, Steve Martin, Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Carrey, Chris Rock, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Peyton Manning, Tina Fey, Bill Murray) featured in the Top 10 Things I've always wanted to say to Dave list; and President Barack Obama summed up the US sentiment in one tweet.

David’s last show was undoubtably an eventful one, drenched with bittersweet farewells, prickly humor, and many heartwarming moments. David passes on the baton to Stephen Colbert, whose skilled satire will have a high benchmark to compete with.

David Letterman is by now a New York landmark: whoever strolls in the Theater District, and bumps into 1697-1699 Broadway between West 53rd and West 54th, breathes in the vibe of a New Yorker who adores his city and has tributed it with utmost professional skills. He once said “If you didn't believe it before - and it's easy to understand how you might have been skeptical on this point - if you didn't believe it before, you can absolutely believe it now: New York City is the greatest city in the world.”

WHAT HAPPENED, MISS SIMONE?, A Portrait of Music Icon Nina Simone, Premieres on Netflix

Using never-before-heard recordings, rare archival footage and her best-known songs, this is the story of legendary singer and activist Nina Simone.

Documentary by Oscar Nominee Liz Garbus Has Netflix Release on June 26; Theatrical Premiere on June 24

Film Chronicles Nina Simone's Journey from Child Piano Prodigy to Iconic Musician and Passionate Activist, Told in Her Own Words

***

WHAT HAPPENED, MISS SIMONE?, a Netflix Original Documentary on music icon Nina Simone from Oscar®-nominated filmmaker Liz Garbus, will premiere in all territories where Netflix is available on Friday, June 26 at 12:01am PT. Netflix will also release the film theatrically on Wednesday, June 24 in New York and Friday, June 26 in Los Angeles. The film received its world premiere as the Opening Night film of the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.

Classically trained pianist, dive-bar chanteuse, black power icon and legendary recording artist, Nina Simone lived a life of brutal honesty, musical genius and tortured melancholy. In this epic documentary, director Liz Garbus interweaves never-before-heard recordings and rare archival footage together with Nina's most memorable songs, to create an unforgettable portrait of one of the least understood, yet most beloved, artists of our time.

The film uses recently unearthed audio tapes, recorded over the course of three decades, of Nina telling her life story to various interviewers and would-be biographers. From over 100 hours of these recordings, WHAT HAPPENED, MISS SIMONE? weaves together Nina's narrative, told largely in her own words. Rare concert footage and archival interviews, along with diaries, letters, interviews with Nina's daughter, Lisa Simone Kelly, friends and collaborators, along with other exclusive materials, make this the most authentic, personal and unflinching telling of the extraordinary life of one of the 20th century's greatest recording artists.

The documentary was directed by Academy Award®-nominated Liz Garbus (The Farm: Angola, USA; Bobby Fischer Against The World) and produced by RadicalMedia's Jon Kamen (The Fog of War), Justin Wilkes (Under African Skies), Tangerine Entertainment's Amy Hobby (Lucky Them), and Jayson Jackson of Seven Days Entertainment. The film was executive produced by Lisa Simone Kelly, Sidney Beaumont of RadicalMedia, and Netflix's Lisa Nishimura and Adam Del Deo. The film was produced in cooperation with the Estate of Nina Simone.

Alongside the film, Revive Music/RCA/Sony will be recording an album paying homage to Nina Simone. Key contemporary artists who are fans of Simone were asked to cover one of her many iconic songs. Artists participating include Lauryn HillCommonMary J. BligeUsher, and Lisa Simone Kelly, among others.

What's wrong with Game of Thrones? The PROs & CONs!

"game of thrones season 5 Official Trailer episode 1" "Game of Thrones trailer (2015) HD" "Game of Thrones 2015 Season 5" "game of thrones" "season 5" "episode 1" Special Promotions ( Game of Thrones ) LINK ►► http://goo.gl/3Lf0Wl ==================================================================== Season 5 of Game of Thrones was commissioned by HBO on 8 April 2014, following a substantial increase in audience figures between the third and fourth seasons.[2] The fifth and sixth seasons were commissioned simultaneously, the first time HBO has commissioned two seasons at once for a major drama series.

So I loved Game of Thrones, gave it 4/4. The new season is starting this Sunday and I can't wait for it. But I have been thinking about Pros & Cons of the show, specially the cons (yeah, I'm still wasting my time thinking about the show, can't help it!). Is there anything wrong with the show? Lets see...

Pros

  • Intriguing and well executed complex storylines, with great mix of drama, action, suspense, humor, fantasy, adventure and everything else.
  • Great casting and amazing performances by almost all major & minor cast members.
  • It's a true visual treat. From great cinematography, to well designed costumes, great sets, amazing visual effects, nothing less than a true cinematic experience.
  • Sex & nudity sells, and this show sells it very well. Just enough sex & nudity to keep the audience entertained.
  • Sexual diversity is another trademark of the show. From homosexuality, to asexuals, to BDSM/fetish, the show touches on many aspects of sexuality.
  • Dragons! Who doesn't like dragons. Although we don't get enough of them on the show yet, but it does have dragons!!

Cons

  • It seems racist, it does. Not enough characters of color, almost none actually. How an entire world can be just white? Except slaves, being liberated by white woman. History has something to prove there, but it does comes off as racist.
  • It's sexist, SEX SEX SEX, yeah too much sex & sexual violence. There's enough sex & nudity that it's almost close to soft-core porn. And it's presented as mostly demeaning to women. Rape, torture, incest etc all glorified in name of sex.
  • Half-baked & uncooked plot twists. With a huge show like this, it's difficult to fully bake every aspect some things like Shae's betrayal is just not well executed.
  • Some poor casting choices. Like Sibel Kikilli as Shae, who may be a good actress (I have never seen her work) but she's really annoying with her voice & nagging in the role.
  • It took 4 seasons for Joffrey to die. I mean, c'mon! He's a narcissist psychopath who everyone hates. Why not just kill him? There is another legit heir, his brother who's all he is but a psychopath. But it took us 4 seasons to see him die!
  • Too many deaths. I know, the show is known for it's unpredictable deaths and almost any character can die. It was surprising and interesting in beginning for some, but it's getting cumbersome too now. Like Jojen's death, who cares about him? At some point, the deaths lose their shock value, specially when character is not developed enough, or there's just too much of it.
  • This show is addictive. If you haven't seen it already, you're going to binge watch and invest/waste 40 hrs catching up. And then wait for 10 Sundays with anticipation. Why?!?!?!

I think that's enough for now. I still can't wait for the Season 5 this Sunday. I just love this show, it's awesome!

FIGHT CANCER WITH BASEBALL and WILL FERRELL

Mr. Will Ferrell is more than just funny! The man is smart as a whip and what we gather from people that work for him and with him, he’s progressive, kind and happily non-sexist and non racist despite making anchorman Ron Burgundy of "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” fame a hodgepodge of all of the above and more!

Mr. Ferrell’s funny is smart and his web based company — FUNNY OR DIE is just one small but excellent example of the sharp business mind that’s floating around inside his cranium.

HBO brass made this Will Ferrell match in a new HBO SPECIAL FROM FUNNY OR DIE, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL.

Yes, I read that correctly. We typed it in all CAPS to make sure that you read it correctly.

In a role filled with hopes and dreams, Will Ferrell will be at five different spring training ballparks in Arizona tomorrow as production begins on a new HBO special from Funny Or Die, in partnership with Major League Baseball. Dedicating the special to the fight against cancer, Ferrell is also honoring the historic feat of Bert Campaneris five decades ago by playing every position on the field, and maybe some off the field, for ten different teams in the same day.

Ferrell’s historic day, which will be covered on social media using #FerrellTakesTheField, will be chronicled in the exclusive HBO special, which will air later this year and also feature MLB players, managers, coaches, executives and fans.

“We hope to always be in the Will Ferrell business,” says Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. “This latest collaboration is one of those things only Will could pull off. I can’t wait to see him take the field.”

Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. said, “Spring training affords an appropriate setting where our game can serve as the backdrop for an event that will benefit organizations that fight cancer. Will is a big fan of our game, and many of us in baseball – among our clubs, players and our millions of fans – are big fans of his. Major League Baseball is happy to take part in what will surely be a fun and memorable day for a great cause.”

Ferrell’s goal is to honor “Campy” Campaneris while also helping organizations dedicated to fighting cancer, including Cancer for College. Formed in 1993, Cancer for College is a charity that helps individuals adversely affected by cancer to realize their dream of a college education.

Ferrell will be playing in the following games as part of the special:

March 12     (all times Pacific; subject to change)

12:05 p.m.  Seattle Mariners at Oakland Athletics (HoHoKam Stadium)

1:10 p.m.   Chicago Cubs at Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (Tempe Diablo Stadium)

2:10 p.m.   Cincinnati Reds at Arizona Diamondbacks (Salt River Fields at Talking Stick)

4:05 p.m.   San Francisco Giants at Chicago White Sox (Camelback Ranch)

6:15 p.m.     Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres (Peoria Stadium)

An important part of the fundraising efforts will be game-used memorabilia from Ferrell’s journey across the five ballparks, to be auctioned at MLB.com with proceeds being donated to Cancer for College, as well as Stand Up To Cancer, a ground-breaking initiative created to accelerate innovative cancer research. MLB is the founding donor to Stand Up To Cancer.

On Sept. 8, 1965, Bert “Campy” Campaneris, in only his second major league season, went 0-for-3 playing all nine positions for the Kansas City Athletics in a game against the California Angels. Campaneris is expected to be there with Ferrell as he begins his journey tomorrow.

Ferrell previously appeared on HBO in the 2009 comedy special “Will Ferrell: You’re Welcome America. A Final Night with George W Bush.” He was also an executive producer of and guest-starred in HBO’s “Eastbound & Down” and “Funny Or Die Presents.”

The new special is executive produced by Will Ferrell in association with Gary Sanchez Productions, Funny Or Die’s Mike Farah and Joe Farrell, and Stuart Miller, and directed by Brian McGinn.

Funny Or Die launched in April 2007 and has become an award-wining top destination for comedy on the web. The site has over 19 million unique users per month, over 60 million video views per month, and has grown into a vertically integrated digital studio that produces high quality content over numerous platforms, operating a social media and marketing division with over 9 million Twitter followers, approximately 11 million Facebook fans (#1 Comedy Brand on both Twitter and Facebook) and devoted followers on numerous social networking and sharing sites.
