After a successful launch out of Sundance Film Festival ’17, Spike TV & The Weinstein Company bring the new docu-series TIME: THE KALIEF BROWDER STORY, which is premiering on Spike TV tonight. The series, Executive Produced by Shawn “Jay Z” Carter and Harvey Weinstein, tells the powerful & heartbreaking story of Kalief Browder, a 16-year-boy who was arrested for allegedly stealing a backpack, never convicted of anything in relation, yet spent at least 800 DAYS IN SOLITARY CONFINEMENT, AND MORE THAN 1,000 DAYS IN THE NOTORIOUS RIKER’S ISLAND PRISON. With nearly 1,000 hours’ worth of footage and over 300 interviews (including the Browder family, Governor Andrew Cuomo, Van Jones, Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder), the docu-series dives deep into the sad truth of racial inequality within the U.S. criminal justice system.
The series does a great job of portraying the true story, from a very inclusive point of view. The film gives you perspective of the other side, including the correction officers, law enforcement , politicians and others. Although, the story is driven by Kalief's horrible journey and experiences, it manages to capture the overall essence of where we stand right now. How being born in certain conditions, can already heavily set you up for failure. How the society and government partake in that process and the worst it may lead to, in this case that being Kalief. It's a very moving story, told in a very impactful way, thanks to the filmmaker Jenner Furst & producers/collaboraters, Nick Sandow, Julia Willouhby Nason, Jay Z, Harvey Weinstein and others.
SYNOPSIS: At 16, Kalief Browder was charged with stealing a backpack, then arrested in the Bronx.
