This morning HBO Documentary Films released the trailer and poster for its outstanding new docu TERROR AT THE MALL (Debuts Monday, Sept. 15 at 9 PM debut on HBO).

Primetime Emmy-nominated filmmaker/director Dan Reed, who is based in the UK, will be available for interviews while in the U.S. for the premiere. He’ll be in NYC onSeptember 8 and 9 and in Seattle on September 10 and 11.

HBO's TERROR AT THE MALL, from director Dan Reed, follows from the filmmaker’s previous HBO films on urban terrorist attacks including Terror in Moscow and Terror in Mumbai (nominated for the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Directing for Nonfiction Programming). The documentary examines the Islamist group al-Shabaab’s storming of the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, which resulted in 67 deaths and over 200 injuries on September 21, 2013. The four terrorists who committed the attack were subsequently killed.

TERROR AT THE MALL provides the most complete record to date of what happened in the Westgate. With incredible editing and first-hand accounts from those involved, Reed pieces together riveting footage, allowing the viewer to follow the events around the mall, from camera to camera.

The film features previously unseen footage – including closed-circuit television footage from locations throughout the mall – and photographs of the tragedy. It also features exclusive interviews with survivors of the attack, including some who are now in the United States, a handful of heroic citizens and police officers, as well as Goran Tomasevic, chief photographer for East Africa for global news agency Reuters.

Incredibly, Reed and his team sorted through thousands of hours of footage from over 120 cameras that captured the attack happening in real-time. In my view, the film raises troubling questions about the handling of the event and response time of the Kenyan government, military and police force. And it offers lessons for the future.

NOTE: After its debut on Sept. 15th at 9 PM, TERROR AT THE MALL will have numerous additional airings throughout September and October on HBO and HBO2. It will also be available on HBO GO and HBO On Demand.
