GoldenGlobes 2017 show DIVERSITY & INCLUSION in Hollywood: LaLaLand is the big winner along with Moonlight, Atlanta and Meryl Streep

GoldenGlobes presented by Hollywood Foreign Press association are one of the most coveted entertainment award of the year, in TV & Film. But they are also known for their host, the presentation, the party and almost everything about it. The 74th Golden Globe Awards last night were not disappointing. It was fun!

Jimmy Fallon was the host this year, and as expected he was what he is, sweet, kind, charming, fun & non-scandalous. Although he did try to make up for his Trump interview by making few jokes on Trump. Although his opening monologue almost got sabotaged like Mariah Carey, but he was able to rescue it by his wit and NBC's quick teleprompter replacement. His cold open with the LaLaLand style musical was really cool though. There was no hard-hitting scandalous comments like Ricky Gervais or even Tina Fey & Amy Poehler, but it was a fun, clean family entertainment  hosting version with Jimmy.

Host Jimmy Fallon kicks off the 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

The presenters were pretty good too. It was great to see some INCLUSION & DIVERSITY on the stage. Priyanka Chopra rocked the stage in her beautiful golden dress and beautiful smile. Dev Patel was on the stage with the young Sunny Pawar, both from the wonderful film LION. Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn had quite a fun bit, with Goldie playing the dumb blind old lady, and Amy playing Amy. But the night's best was Kristen Wiig and Steve Carrell. There skit about there first animated movie was HILARIOUS!

Title says it all

The most talked about event of the night was Meryl Streep's speech. Meryl was presented the Cecil B. deMille award by Viola Davis. The most decorated and one of the best actress of all time, definitely deserved this accolade, like many other she has won. But she did not just give a speech thanking people or talking about women issues, sexism etc. She took the opportunity to express her honest opinion about the current political situation in the country. And in turn she gained respect of several more Americans, and probably disdain of many too. You can check out the speech here for yourself.

One of the awards season’s premier events, the SAG Awards annually celebrates the outstanding motion pictures and television performances from the previous calendar year. Of the top industry honors presented to actors, only the SAG Awards are selected entirely by performers’ peers in SAG-AFTRA. The SAG Awards was the first televised awards show to acknowledge the work of union members and the first to present awards to motion picture casts and television ensembles.

Two nominating panels — one for television and one for film — each composed of 2,500 randomly selected SAG-AFTRA members from across the United States, chose this year’s nominees. Final voting information will be sent to the 121,546 SAG-AFTRA members in good standing across the country, who may vote on all categories. In keeping with the SAG Awards’ commitment to sustainable practices, online voting is encouraged. Request for optional paper ballots must be made to Integrity Voting Systems by Friday, Jan. 13, 2017. All votes must be received at the elections firm by noon PT on Friday, Jan. 27. Results will be tallied and sealed until the envelopes are opened by the presenters live onstage at the 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony on Jan. 29, 2017.

The Screen Actors Guild Post-Awards Gala benefiting the SAG-AFTRA Foundation will be hosted for the 21st consecutive year by People and the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) to benefit the SAG-AFTRA Foundation and honor actors’ philanthropic activities. The 2017 award season has begun, and thankfully this year looks lot more colorful that last year. There are almost too many awards to keep count of, but Golden Globes is one of the most prestigious awards out there. The 74th Golden Globe Awards, which are voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, announced the nominees for the 2017 Golden Globe Awards. And they announced nominations for the 2017 awards today.

The musical “La La Land” leads the film nominees with a total of seven mentions, followed by “Moonlight” with six. On the TV side “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” tops with five.

The 2017 ceremony is set to honor Meryl Streep with the Cecil B. DeMille Award who has won eight Golden Globes and has been nominated 29 times, including the recent nomination for“Florence Foster Jenkins.”

On her nomination RUTH NEGGA, who plays the late Mildred Loving, in“Loving”  (Focus Features) has this to say about her nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama (Golden Globes) — “I am profoundly grateful for this recognition… I can’t thank the HFPA enough for their support, this is such an honor. I am humbled to be in the company of all of these extraordinary, talented, and powerful women. It has been such a gift to share Mildred and Richard Loving’s important story with the world. I share this honor with my partner in the film, Joel Edgerton, our incredible director Jeff Nichols and everyone involved in bringing Loving to life.”

The 74th Golden Globe Awards, which are voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, will be hosted by Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon and will air live on both coasts Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017 on NBC.

@LAFilmFestival 2016, June 1-9 | Celebrating Independent Cinema, promoting DIVERSITY & INCLUSION #LAFilmFestival

It's that time again, when the best of independent, national and international cinema comes all together in Los Angeles. It's celebration of the best in films, where you get to see not only established filmmakers celebrate their work, but also many up & coming, and to-be stars. Los Angeles Film Festival is known for that. If you're a film lover, you cannot and should not afford to miss LAFF2016, that starts tomorrow.

The 2016 Los Angeles Film Festival, produced by Film Independent, the non-profit arts organization that also produces the Film Independent Spirit Awards, begins with the opening night film “Lowriders” directed by Ricardo de Montreuil starring Eva Longoria and closes with the visceral suspense-thriller “Desierto” directed by Jonás Cuarón and producer Alfonso Caurón, starring Gael Garcia Bernal.

Keeping the issue of inclusion and diversity firmly in the headlines director Ryan Coogler (“Creed”) has been added as Guest Director and will attend the 15th annual Filmmaker Retreat, a signature program which brings together all the feature directors [in this year’s Festival] along with seasoned filmmakers and Film Independent Board Members who attend as honored artists.

On June 2nd Nate Parker will share what it took to bring the story of Nat Turner, an African-American preacher to the big screen in Labor of Love: The Birth of a Nation Conversation and will be joined by cast members Aja Naomi King (How to Get Away with Murder) and Gabrielle Union (Being Mary Jane).

This years’ Spirit of Independence Award which honors those who advance the cause of independent film and champion creative freedom will be awarded to Ava DuVernay (“Selma”) and her distribution company Array Releasing, on June 4th.

Exploring inclusion on a global scale the Global Media Makers Presents: Storytelling From The Inside Out, a U.S. Department of State and Film Independent international mentoring initiative that connects visual storytellers from around the world with leading U.S. entertainment professionals through specially tailored mentorships, workshops and master classes.

Highlighting the continued conversation on diversity, the Diversity Speaks Panels brings together content creators of underrepresented communities who embody innovation to discuss how they manage to combine their passions for storytelling, entrepreneurship and their cultural identities into success stories. One of the many highlights include Issa Rae (Awkward Black Girl) will join Film Independent Curator Elvis Mitchell in conversation for an intimate off-the-record talk.

Festival Director Stephanie Allain weighed in on this years’ selection. “We are thrilled to open with ‘Lowriders,’ a culturally vibrant film that explores familial relationships within a second-generation Mexican family in East LA. Made by filmmakers of color, ‘Lowriders’ embodies our mission of shining the light on unique voices. Spirit Award winner Ryan Coogler honors us as Guest Director – we had Fruitvale Station at the Festival in 2013 and are so happy to have him back this year as our Guest Director.”

Film Independent President Josh Welsh shared his enthusiasm on awarding Ava DuVernay the Spirit of Independence Award.

“We can’t imagine a more fitting recipient of the Spirit of Independence Award than Ava DuVernay and her distribution company Array Releasing,” said Welsh. “In addition to being a brilliant filmmaker, Ava is a passionate, forward-thinking distributor, helping unique and diverse voices find their audiences. Array bought Takeshi Fukunaga’s Out of My Hand at last year’s Festival, a film that we celebrated at this year’s Film Independent Spirit Awards.”

THE FILM SOCIETY OF LINCOLN CENTER UNVEILS THE 54th NEW YORK FILM FESTIVAL POSTER, DESIGNED BY FILMMAKER APICHATPONG WEERASETHAKUL

The Film Society of Lincoln Center unveiled today the poster for the 54th New York Film Festival (September 30 – October 16), designed by acclaimed filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul. NYFF posters are looked upon as a yearly artistic “signature” for the film festival, and Weerasethakul joins a stellar lineup of artists whose work has been commissioned for the festival, including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, Julian Schnabel, Cindy Sherman, and last year’s artist, Laurie Anderson. A link to download the new poster design, alongside the complete list of NYFF poster artists to date, can be found below.

“Apichatpong Weerasethakul is more than just a ‘logical’ choice to do our poster—he’s one of the world’s greatest filmmakers and he works in the visual arts,” said New York Film Festival Director Kent Jones. “I knew that he would send us something extraordinary: a beautifully wrought, self-contained little world. The more you concentrate on the image, the more detail you see, and the further your dream extends. The NYFF has had many great posters designed by a long list of great artists, but this is one of the very best.”

The renowned Thai filmmaker and artist, whose works deal with memory and subtly address personal politics and social issues, has had a fruitful relationship with the New York Film Festival for over a decade. Four of his films have been selected for the official NYFF lineup: Tropical Malady (2004), Syndromes and a Century (2006), the Palme d’Or–winning Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010), and Cemetery of Splendor (2015). Rooftop Films Announces Short Films and Programs for the 20th Annual Summer Series

When Rooftop Films began 20 summers ago on the roof of a tenement building in the Lower East Side it was a single evening of short films. 19 years later the organization has grown tremendously— hosting over 50 extraordinary events every summer, with live music and after-parties all across NYC— but they still strive to champion emerging in the short film community, and still believe that the medium is ripe for experimentation and opportunity. This season, Rooftop Films will present over 130 short films in over 13 programs, each curated with complementary and riveting themes.

Rooftop Films kicks off its summer on Friday, May 20th at The Bushwick Generator, in Brooklyn with “This Is What We Mean By Short Films,” a selection of dynamic shorts that encapsulates the adventurous spirit of the organization, and the untapped potential of the summer. The program will showcase some of the best, most innovative short films by independent filmmakers from around the world, including four parts of Black Eye Symphony, a comedic suite by Steve Collins, who has been screening films at Rooftop since their very first show 20 summers ago.

“Climbing to a rooftop to watch movies is always a daring escapade, and the most daring films are often shorts,” says Mark Elijah Rosenberg, founder and Artistic Director of Rooftop Films. “This year’s lineup of shorts exhibits some of the most intrepid and astonishing cinema from around the world, with radical documentaries, captivating fiction, stunning animation, and bold new forms that will incite and inspire for years to come.”

Throughout the summer, Rooftop Films will present a number of carefully curated programs, each with a specific focus or theme. Highlights of the 20th Summer Series include three nights of documentaries (including Rooftop’s signature New York Non-Fiction program), a selection of shorts about unlikely romances, selected highlights from the Sundance Film Festival and the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), two programs of animated short films, and a program of meditative and experimental short installations at Storm King Art Center in Mountainville, New York.

Tickets for short film programs and feature films are on sale at www.rooftopfilms.com.

IFP ANNOUNCES TEN PROJECTS SELECTED FOR SECOND IFP SCREEN FORWARD LAB

2016 Lab Leaders include VR Filmmaker and United Nations Senior Advisor Gabo Arora, Borderline Media’s Jennifer MacArthur and “The Outs” Producer Amanda Warman

The Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP) announced today the projects selected for the second annual Screen Forward Lab, IFP’s yearlong fellowship for content creators with story-driven serialized projects. The program kicks off today, running April 18-22 at the Made in NY Media Center by IFP located in DUMBO, Brooklyn.

Inspired by the successful long-running IFP Filmmaker Labs that focus on helping directors complete, market and introduce audiences to cutting edge first-features, the Screen Forward Lab will support innovative content creators with $10,000 worth of services and support over the course of a year. The Lab is open to innovative media creators with story-driven, serialized projects created on all platforms and formats including web series, VR, or app based work (Instagram, Vine, Snapchat, etc.). All projects must have at minimum representative sample visual content (a completed episode, demo, excerpt) already in place, and cannot have already launched their project publicly.

“We are excited to present the second edition of the IFP Lab for web based creative content. “ says Joana Vicente, Executive Director at IFP and the Made in New York Media Center by IFP.“There’s a meshing of the worlds of film, digital and tech that’s been occurring for a long time.  IFP remains a place for independent film, but it’s evolving to becoming a place where digital and tech, old school and new school, web series and indie film all coalesce.”

Under the leadership of Amy Dotson, Head of Programming, and Holly Kang, IFP Screen Forward Labs Producer, the Labs will provide participants with the knowledge, resources and mentor support necessary for developing strong pitches, securing financing, creating marketing strategies and finding unique avenues for the distribution of their work.  Individualized attention for each project will also be paid to building sustainable audiences, as well as long-term strategy for career sustainability.

This year, 80% of the creators/writers/directors are women and/or diverse voices.  30% feature predominantly African-American and Latino casts.

The Screen Forward Lab week will culminate with all projects presenting and pitching to investors, online distributors, network executives and tech companies at IFP Film Week 2016. And post-Labs, all content creator teams will receive a free, six-month residency at the Made in NY Media Center by IFP as well as ongoing individualized access to classes, workshops and support from industry and creative mentors.

Patrón tequila and Ultimat vodka cocktails will be featured at the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards® ceremony on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016. The specially created cocktails also will be part of the Post-Awards Gala, which is co-hosted by PEOPLE and the Entertainment Industry Foundation.

Patrón has created two signature cocktails with ultra-premium Patrón tequila, and one drink featuring Ultimat vodka, for the star-studded SAG Awards events. The “Patrón 22” in honor of the Awards’ 22nd year, is prepared with 100 percent agave Patrón Silver tequila, fresh pineapple and fresh lime juice. The other Patrón cocktail, aptly called “The Actor,” includes Patrón Reposado tequila (aged more than two months in oak barrels), Patrón Citrónge liqueur, and fresh lemon juice. The “Ultimat Award” cocktail is created with Ultimat vodka, Patrón Citrónge liqueur, cranberry juice, lime and simple syrup.

“It’s truly limitless the number of inventive cocktails that can be created with Patrón tequilas, and events like the Screen Actors Guild Awards are the perfect venue to showcase this versatility,” said Patrón’s mixology manager David Alan, who helped create the cocktails for the evening. “It’s a privilege to again be part of this prestigious celebration, and we look forward to raising a glass of Patrón in a toast to the outstanding performances and talented actors honored at the Awards this year.”

SEX IN PUBLIC AT OUTsider 2016 FESTIVAL REVEALS UPCOMING EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

OUTsider, Queer Multi-Arts Festival and Conference,

Returns to Austin on February 17-21, 2016

Capture.PNG

Austin, TX — OUTsider, a mischievous non-profit queer multi-arts festival and conference, celebrating creative nonconformity and cross-disciplinary play, will take place February 17-21, 2016 in Austin, TX. OUTsider ventures into its second edition with a bold new theme: “Sex in Public.” Following the legalization of gay marriage, this theme promises an imaginatively “undomesticated” spectacle of multi-disciplinary art that puts the sex back in homosexuality, while friskily queering bodies, bedrooms and behaviors.

OUTsider will honor erotic icon and self-proclaimed “post-porn modernist” Annie Sprinkle and her partner, ecological sex (“eco-sex”) artist Beth Stephens, with the second annual OUTsider Legacy Award. For the festivities, Sprinkle and Stephens will deliver a performative lecture on their sinsational work, spanning porn, performance, activism and visual art. This lecture will be followed by an ECOSEX WALKING TOUR: Sprinkle and Stephen’s guided tour of the ecosexy sites of Manor Road, inviting audience members to experience the fun as they shift the metaphor from “Earth as mother,” to “Earth as lover!,” learning 25 ways to make love to the Earth, finding the e-spot and exploring the eroticism of nature through the senses.

“OUTsider is delighted to honor Annie Sprinkle and Beth Stephens with our 2016 Legacy Award,” states Curran Nault, OUTsider Artistic Director. “The playful daring and oddball charm of their work champions the same spirit that drives OUTsider. We’re tickled pink to have them here in Austin, sharing their boldly uncommon work with our festival audience.”

Opening Night of OUTsider 2016 will feature a glitter-tasseled array of burlesque, headlined by the electrifying Oakland-based artist La Chica Boom, who evokes hyper-raciality/sexuality/gender to arouse provocative questions about coloniality, compulsory whiteness and Mexicanidad. Opening Night will also witness the unveiling of this year’s Installation Centerpiece, THE NEW RULES OF FLAGGING, a multi- screen video installation and exhibition conceived and curated by Los Angeles garage-aesthetic artist Jonesy. FLAGGING pays interactive homage to the infamous “gay hanky code”: a color coded system of handkerchiefs used among gay male casual sex-seekers in the 1970s to indicate preferred sexual activities, fetishes and positions.

“La Chica Boom and Jonesy are two of the most provocative queer artists working today, particularly on matters of sex and sexuality,” says Nault. “La Chica Boom effectively wows audiences with her spectacular, bodily performances, while also managing to make them think deeply about race, politics and culture. And, Jonesy seduces audiences into sexy and surreal landscapes that allow them to experience the world anew. These two remarkable talents fearlessly embody this year’s ‘Sex in Public’ theme.”

OUTsider’s full festival program, sexy and otherwise, will be announced in early January, and will include everything from a multi-disciplinary art event exploring stories of queer Southern migration from diverse perspectives of gender, geography and race (Y’ALL COME BACK), to an early career retrospective of renowned Chicana performance artist, and famed WORK OF ART contestant, Nao Bustamante. OUTsider 2016 will also mark the return of the enormously popular academic-cum-artist series “Conference on the Couch,” featuring panels on such things as queer art and gentrification, the often thin line between art and porn, and much more.

Badges for OUTsider go on sale on Tuesday, November 17th, as part of a crowdfunding campaign on Generosity by Indiegogo. Aiming to raise $10,000 to cover the high costs associated with artist travel, lodging and operational fees for a DIY non-profit without corporate sponsors, OUTsider has enlisted the help of wacky “televangelist” duo Reverie and Randee—played by local performance artist Paul Soileau (CHRISTEENE) and filmmaker PJ Raval (BEFORE YOU KNOW IT). Reverie and Randee will release a series of wild videos in conjunction with the campaign, and will host a live telethon at the campaign’s end: Sunday, December 6th at Salvage Vanguard Theater (2803 E. Manor Road, Austin, TX). This telethon will also be broadcast live online.

FSLC and The Jewish Museum announce 25th annual New York Jewish Film Festival main slate

The Film Society of Lincoln Center and The Jewish Museum will present the 25th annual New York Jewish Film Festival (NYJFF) at the Film Society’s Walter Reade Theater and Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center, January 13-26, 2016. The festival is one of the oldest and most influential Jewish film festivals worldwide, unique in New York City, and one of the longest running partnerships of two major New York cultural institutions. Since its founding in 1992, the NYJFF has presented more than 675 films from 43 countries, of which 320 were world, U.S., or New York premieres, and many have gone on to win awards and gain wider distribution.

This year’s lineup includes 38 features and shorts from 12 countries—21 screening in their world, U.S., or New York premieres—providing a diverse global perspective on the Jewish experience. The 25th edition will feature a retrospective of film highlights from previous festivals, a poster exhibition, a panel discussion, and other special programming in honor of the New York Jewish Film Festival’s silver anniversary to be announced shortly along with the complete festival schedule.

The New York Jewish Film Festival opens on Wednesday, January 13 with the U.S. premiere of Yared Zeleke’s Lamb, the first Ethiopian film to be an Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival and the country’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar. This feature debut focuses on young Ephraim, who is sent by his father to live among distant relatives after his mother’s death. But when his beloved sheep must be sacrificed for the next religious feast, the boy will do anything to save the animal and return home.

Closing Night on January 26 will feature A Tale of Love and Darkness, Academy Award winner Natalie Portman’s debut as screenwriter and director. Based on Amos Oz’s international best-seller, the film recounts the time Oz spent with his mother, Fania (Portman), who struggled to raise her son in Jerusalem at the end of the British Mandate for Palestine and the early years of the State of Israel.

Screening in its U.S. premiere is a special presentation of Amos Gitai’s Rabin, the Last Day, a thought-provoking thriller investigating the brutal 1995 assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin through a masterful combination of dramatized scenes and news footage of the shooting and its aftermath, shedding light on an ever-growing crisis of the impunity of hate crimes in Israel today.

Catherine Tambini’s documentary Art and Heart: The World of Isaiah Shefferreceives its world premiere, celebrating founder and artistic director of Symphony Space Isaiah Sheffer and his indelible influence on music, theater, television, and culture across three decades in New York. Also receiving its world premiere is Sarah Kramer’s short Period. New Paragraph., a loving portrait of a father by his daughter, as well as an homage to a past era.

Sam Ball’s The Rifleman’s Violin will receive its New York premiere as part of a special musical event. In this documentary short, violinist Stuart Canin recalls the private performance he gave at the request of Harry Truman to break the tension at post-World War II negotiations with Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin. Following the film, Canin will recreate his performance with pianist Thomas Sauer before an on-stage discussion with Canin, producer Abraham Sofaer, director Sam Ball, and Stanford University historian Norman Naimark.

A trio of documentaries receiving New York or U.S. premieres examine three individuals whose lives intersected with the world of film. Marianne Lambert’s documentary I Don’t Belong Anywhere: The Cinema of Chantal Akerman, a U.S. premiere, dives into the 40-film oeuvre of the late Jewish Belgian pioneer, who traced a worldwide path of rugged avant-garde and political art from Brussels to Tel Aviv, Paris to New York. Barry Avrich’s The Man Who Shot Hollywoodexplores the life of Yasha Pashkovsky, a Jewish Russian immigrant photographer who practiced his art anonymously during Hollywood’s golden age and amassed 400 portraits of movie stars, including Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Gary Cooper, and Shirley Temple. Tatiana Brandrup’s Cinema: A Public Affair charts the rise and fall of the Moscow State Central Cinema Museum under the leadership of Russian film historian Naum Kleiman, who founded the institution in 1989 as the Soviet Union was collapsed and gave rise to the perestroika reform movement.

Special Presentation:
Rabin, the Last Day
Amos Gitai, Israel/France, 2015, DCP, 153m
Hebrew with English subtitles

On the evening of November 4, 1995, Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was shot down at the end of a huge political rally in Tel Aviv. The killer apprehended at the scene turned out to be a 25-year-old student and observant Jew. Investigation into this brutal murder reveals a dark and frightening world—a subculture of hate fueled by hysterical rhetoric, paranoia, and political intrigue, made up of extremist rabbis who condemned Rabin by invoking an obscure Talmudic ruling, prominent right-wing politicians who joined in a campaign of incitement against Rabin, militant Israeli settlers for whom peace meant betrayal, and the security agents who saw what was coming and failed to prevent it. Twenty years after the death of the Nobel Peace Prize winner, acclaimed filmmaker Amos Gitai sheds light on an ever-growing crisis of the impunity of hate crimes in Israel today with this thought-provoking political thriller, which masterfully combines dramatized scenes with actual news footage of the shooting and its aftermath. U.S. Premiere

Sam Ball, USA, 2014, Digital projection, 14m

To break the ice in these tense discussions, Truman requested a private performance by the young virtuoso violinist Stuart Canin, who had fought as a GI on the front lines earlier that year. In Sam Ball’s short documentary, a 90-year-old Canin recalls his performance with wit and verve. The Rifleman’s Violin was produced by Abraham D. Sofaer for the Potsdam Revisited: Overture to the Cold War multimedia project created by Citizen Film in partnership with the Hoover Institution Archive at Stanford University - www.potsdamrevisited.org.

The film, which shines a light on the all-too-often ignored problem of homophobia and gender discrimination within the African-American lesbian community, broke NewFest records, selling out four screenings to audiences eager to finally see the issue addressed onscreen and within the lively panels that followed each screening.
