  • 32 Projects from 21 Countries, Across Multiple New Venues

Sundance Institute spotlights work at the dynamic crossroads of film, art, and technology with the New Frontier selections for the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, announced today. This curated collection of cutting-edge independent and experimental media works are by creators who are pushing artistic innovation across mediums that include rocket travel, biotech, facial recognition, mixed reality (MR), smartphone AR, underwater VR, game engines, big data, AI, the human archive, and innovative uses of SMS text & iPhone video capture. Programmers assembled a global slate of work from a mix of invitations and submissions to an open call for work earlier this year.

The 2020 edition of New Frontier returns to two dedicated venue spaces: New Frontier at The Ray and New Frontier Central, each of which hosts a variety of media installations, a VR Cinema, and panel discussions. New this year, New Frontier Central also houses the Biodigital Theatre, a cutting-edge presentation space that will feature a rotating schedule of large scale VR theatrical works including a feature-length livestream game telecast. Once again, New Frontier Central will feature lounge space for credential holders to meet and relax before and after experiencing the New Frontier program. New Frontier also breaks out into the wild with satellite projects in the pool at Festival Headquarters, AR dances to be discovered in various locations around Park City, and a nationwide “fugitive newscast” accessed at various sites around the festival, as well as at 11 art house theatres across the U.S., including The Belcourt Theatre (Nashville, Tenn.); Cinema Detroit; The Loft Cinema (Tucson, Arizona); Michigan Theater (Ann Arbor, Michigan); The Museum of Fine Arts (Houston, Texas), Nitehawk Cinema (Brooklyn, New York), Northwest Film Forum (Seattle, Washington), O Cinema (Miami, Florida), Parkway Theatre (Baltimore, Maryland), The State Theatre (Ann Arbor, Michigan) and Texas Theatre (Dallas, Texas).

Robert Redford, President, and Founder of Sundance Institute, said, “Technology infuses most aspects of modern life -- and is evolving at a historic pace. The New Frontier artists that we showcase are taking completely fresh and thoughtful approaches to how the newest technological formats engage with the ancient art of storytelling.”

Shari Frilot, Chief Curator, New Frontier, said “Powerful technologies now enable experiences that capture, replicate, and replace “the real.” But it is even more special when the human touch converges with technology, we are provoked to reach beyond what we know to be real and enter into unfamiliar terrain. This transcendence can shift who we believe ourselves to be, where our bodies begin and end, what we are to each other, and who we are ultimately capable of being. The 2020 edition of New Frontier stares down the fear of losing our neighborhoods, and losing ourselves, and reminds us that the future is now -- and because the future is now, the future can be ours.”

With these additions, the 2020 Sundance Film Festival Program features 241 works, 44% are directed or led by one or more women, 35% were directed or led by one or more artists of color, and 19% by one or more people who identify as LGBTQ+. The 32 projects announced today include work from 21 countries, and 31% are directed or led by one or more women, 44% are directed or led by one or more artists of color, and 31% by one or more people who identify as LGBTQ+. 4 were supported by Sundance Institute in development, whether through direct granting or residency Labs.

New Frontier alumni include Doug Aitken, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Chris Milk, Nonny de la Peña, Pipilotti Rist and Jennifer Steinkamp. The Institute's support extends well beyond its curated slate of Festival projects and includes the annual New Frontier Story Lab, which offers mentorship and development opportunities for new media storytellers, and the Future of Culture Initiative, an action plan that includes partnerships with Johns Hopkins University and Stanford University in order to implement key recommendations from a two-year global field scan that analyzed strategies for improving equity and inclusion in emerging media. The Sundance Institute New Frontier Program is supported by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Cindy Harrell Horn and Alan Horn, Dell Technologies, Google Empathy Lab, John S., and James L. Knight Foundation, Oculus from Facebook, Unity Technologies, The Walt Disney Company, YouTube VR, and Adobe.

In addition to the New Frontier program announced today, films across all categories, including works in the Shorts, Special Events and Indie Episodic sections, have been announced and are listed at sundance.org/festival.

Look Out For Upcoming Debut LP February 2020

LISTEN/WATCH & SHARE: Emily Lind - "Castles"

"An eclectic bedroom-pop single at its core,“Castles” showcases the unique vision Lind has as a songwriter, as well as the versatility in her capabilities as a vocalist."
- Forbes

Singer-songwriter and actress Emily Lind makes a statement with the release of her debut single, "Castles." The single was premiered with Forbes, praising, "Spanning the spectrum from dark indie-pop to an almost alternative hip-hop sound, Lind’s inaugural outing as an artist is both intriguing and addictive." "Castles," produced with Jerry Powell (producer for A$AP Rocky, Kanye, Ho99o9) and KoOoLkOjAk (producer for Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, Kesha) shows her prowess as a songwriter and performer.

Describing the single, Emily says, "'Castles' is a song about letting go of the pressure we (as humans) tend to put on ourselves. As a musician I use music as an outlet. Therefore I find myself writing the most at times of sadness, and hardships. Personally, I feel that we all like to focus too much on the bad shit going on, that we then, muddy all the good things in the process. I wrote this track because I needed to hear it. I needed someone to say that in life, issues will inevitably arise. Though, we can’t stop them from doing so, we can always change how we choose to perceive them. Accept the bad stuff, learn from it, and then LET IT GO. This song is for this listener. Label it with your name. Make it whatever you need to hear. This song is for you.”

In the same month of the release of her debut single is the release of blockbuster Doctor Sleep which Emily stars in. She plays the iconic Stephen King character, Snakebite Andi. The film has already been a success, amassing over $53 million during its opening weekend.
With the release of the single, Lind also announces an upcoming album, set to be released in February 2020. With more music on the way, Lind is an artist to keep your eyes on as a rapidly rising singer-songwriter.

BIO:

Emily Lind’s natural grace and vulnerable songwriting radiate a level of authenticity one might not expect from a famous young actress who’s acted alongside the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Juliette Lewis, Keanu Reeves, and has even been directed by Clint Eastwood and Gaspar Noe. It’s as if she can step right off the silver screen into her true self: a refreshingly thoughtful and expressive poet, guitarist and singer-songwriter. Perhaps it’s because Emily never expected to pursue music professionally the way she’d pursued acting, since childhood her songs and poems had always been kept to herself so as to never lose her passion for writing.
Emily’s love of artists like Leonard Cohen, Nico, Bob Dylan, Elliot Smith, Bon Iver, and Kendrick Lamar shine through her songs, even though she insists her music sounds like none of them. Her mantra both in song-writing and in life is “flow not force,” and after a series of what felt like forced efforts, she found her producer dream team and new best friends in KoOoLkOjAk and Tizhimself. Having worked with the likes of Kanye West, ASAP Rocky, Ho99o9, and Dojacat to name a few, their highly refined hip-hop chops take the form of wild beats and soundscapes that pour through Emily’s moody, and at times wonderfully weird songs. Her debut single “Castles” is the first track to be revealed off the upcoming LP they made together.

“My main goal is to create a world where people can go, to feel a little less alone,” she says about the EP. “Art in any form is perceived by each person differently, and to me, that is the beauty of creating in general. The truth is when you take away all of the small differences that each human possesses, we are all the same. We all want to feel understood, and having the outlet to do that is such a huge responsibility that I don’t take lightly. I want the music I put out to be whatever the listener needs it to be.” Far from being a safe record, the LP is a series of successful musical experiments that capture the true essence of Emily Lind.

“V WARS” – SEASON 1 - CHARACTER SYNOPSES

LUTHER SWANN (Ian Somerhalder)

A quietly handsome, scholarly medical researcher whose expertise forces him into a world where epidemic disease, government corruption, and murder run rampant. The only man in the world with working knowledge of the illness that is destroying entire sections of society, Luther must dig deep to protect his son and his best friend from the results of the outbreak, causing him to go against his very nature to save those he loves. Pushed to the limits of his humanity, Luther’s struggle to do the right thing by his family is at war with his instinct to remain a decent human being. When he’s forced to break the law to shield his son and his best friend from certain death, Luther discovers that he’s navigating a whole new world where the old rules don’t apply. An everyman forced to become a hero, Swann learns to go against every natural instinct he has to save his loved ones and potentially, all of humanity.

MICHAEL FAYNE (Adrian Holmes)

Naturally fun and adventurous, Michael is a perfect foil for Luther’s steadiness. After discovering he’s Patient Zero for the disease, Michael is miserable and isolated at first but evolves to accept his new abilities and leadership role with ease. Reveling in becoming stronger, faster and smarter, Michael refuses to go back to his old life, forcing his best friends to choose sides against him. When Michael becomes the leader of an organization of others like him, he demands that the world acknowledges them as human beings and not as murderous criminals. His life has changed, and in his eyes, it’s for the better. He’s happy where he is in the new world, and he’s looking forward to his future. He refuses to go down without a fight and if that means sacrificing himself and others along the way, then that’s what it takes. Michael has found his purpose, and he’s willing to do whatever he can to ensure his survival.

DANIKA DUBOV (Kimberly-Sue Murray)

Sexy and self-centered, Danika Dubov is a successful realtor who does equally well with men. Motivated by the finer things in life, Danika is driven by the pursuit of fun and leisure. She loves her work, she loves her life and makes no apologies for her choices. When her world is drastically changed after intimate contact with Fayne, she embraces her new lifestyle and enjoys her newfound romance with the most powerful Blood in the country, Fayne. Nothing gets Danika down for long and her survival skills, along with her ability to go with the flow, are instinctual. Where others put the group’s best interests ahead of themselves, Danika is able to predict shifting tides and protects herself first. A natural strategist, Danika’s will to survive and thrive is an asset to Fayne’s long-term plans for the Bloods.

MILA DUBOV (Laura Vandervoort)

Danika’s younger sister and the polar opposite of Danika. Where Danika can be selfish, Mila is selfless. Danika is a high-profile and status-conscious realtor to the rich, and Mila is a quiet, creative photographer who puts others’ needs ahead of her own. Mila’s gentle nature is in opposition to her new life and she can’t adjust to her need to kill for survival. Mila’s personal struggle and self-hatred are heartbreaking and she has resigned herself to a life of loneliness and isolation. Channeling her frustration the only way she sees fit, Mila becomes an anti-Blood vigilante in the war between humans and Bloods. Her brand of justice doesn’t fix her problems, but it provides temporary relief from her rage and sadness. Even worse, her love for Danika turns to hatred and she swears revenge on her for turning her into a monster.

AVA O’MALLEY (Sydney Meyer)

A 19-year-old genius, Ava’s mind operates like the mind of someone much older. A natural leader and tactician, Ava is the one who convinces Fayne that his life has a purpose now that he’s become a Blood. Indeed, it is Ava who coins the term “Blood” and recruits others to operate as a collective. With Fayne’s protection and input, Ava leaves her old life as a rural farm girl without a backward glance and finds a dazzling future as the second-in-command of a powerful organization. Morally flexible, Ava is not opposed to laying waste to whoever stands in the way of the Blood organization and has to be reined in by Fayne from time to time, but everything she does, she does for the group. Laser-focused with the energy of a genetically enhanced teenager, Ava is an unstoppable force who has clear plans for her own future – even if it means hurting others to guarantee the survival of all Bloods.

KAYLEE VO (Jacky Lai)

Kaylee Vo, a young, Asian, millennial blogger lucks into the biggest story of her life and the world after she witnesses Michael Fayne single-handedly destroying a police station. Her dogged determination to bring the truth about the disease to the public causes her to run afoul of the law several times, but it’s worth it as long as she’s getting the whole truth out there. As the disease spreads, Kaylee discovers how far the government is willing to go to protect its citizens and learns that they’re not always the good guys. After a tragic incident affects Kaylee on a deeply personal level, she’s more determined than ever to make sure the public knows as much as she can uncover in order to survive the catastrophic events unfolding around them. Kaylee is unsure where she fits into the new scheme of things, but finds a way to thrive and survive in a society that she no longer recognizes.

JIMMY SAINT (Michael Greyeyes)

A far-from typical FBI agent. His ability to blend in with people on the fringes of society hides his loyalty to the Agency and the government, making him a perfect candidate for undercover work. When the prion outbreak starts its spread, Jimmy is embedded with bikers on a case but adjusts his mission target as the events surrounding their community becomes more dangerous. What began as a simple undercover case with bikers turns into a matter of life and death for the entire region, and later, the country. Jimmy is tasked with protecting Swann from harm and goes above and beyond the call of duty with no question. It’s his job, and he’s taken an oath to fulfill it to the best of his ability. Jimmy is not sure what his future holds, but for the moment, he honors his oath to the government, despite disagreeing with some of their policies. When called upon to step up, Jimmy is a true hero and carries out his duties to the letter.

CALYX NIKLOS (Peter Outerbridge)

A lethally smart and low-key member of the Department of National Security, Niklos is the ultimate puppet master who hides behind a reassuring and placid exterior. In reality, he’s a ruthless, meticulous planner who finds opportunities to engineer a power grab through manipulation and intimidation without anyone discovering his movements. As the prion outbreak rages, Niklos plays the role of a humble and concerned government official whose only goal is to contain and cure the spread of the disease. If he has to hold Swann against his will at a DNS black site to achieve that goal, that’s the price of success. Behind the scenes, however, Niklos instinctually sees the way the world is moving and carves out a place for himself before anyone knows what he’s done. Niklos’ greatest power is his ability to hide his power, with devastating results.

RACHEL THOMPSON (Nikki Reed)

Swann’s ex-wife, and Dez’s biological mother. Initially estranged from Dez and Swann, Rachel finds an opportunity to seize custody of her child after the world falls apart. Unpredictable and emotionally unstable, Rachel’s fear of the unknown makes her the perfect protector for Dez during the disastrous state of the world and she guides him to safety under catastrophic conditions. Her future is uncertain given the state of country and Swann’s distrust of her, but Rachel does the best she can with what she’s got in this world gone wrong.

Noted Lyricist Mike Greenly in Race for 2020 Grammy Nod & Has A Song Nominated for “A Hollywood in Media” Music Award

With Grammy season ramping up, campaigns for nominations are gearing up as well. Such is the case for seasoned lyricist Mike Greenly whose Dance Club hit, “Perfect Bitch” is up for consideration as Best Dance Recording. First-round voting ends October 12th, 2019, with nominees announced on November 20th, 2019. Final round voting ends January 3rd, 2020. The 62nd Grammy Awards will be held on Sunday, Jan. 26th, 2020 at Los Angeles’ Staples Center and broadcast live on CBS starting at 8pm. In addition, Singer Natalie Jean and lyricist Greenly are excited to announce that their collaboration titled “Love Your Own Power” has received a nomination in the Hollywood in Media Music Awards in the category of Message Song/Social Impact. Just released on September 24, 2019, this female empowerment song turned into a powerful feminist celebration, thanks to the award-winning Haitian-American singer Jean’s performance. Greenly said he’s considered himself a feminist since the ’70s and expresses great pride in the song and in Jean’s rendition. Greenly has successfully been writing lyrics for years, achieving Billboard-charted Dance Club hits with such artists as Tony Moran, Jason Walker, Kimberly Davis and Shara Strand. He has also worked with Paul Guzzone, Michéal Castaldo, Piper Martini, Sophia Papoulis, Amber Collins, Ryan Shaw, Natalie Jean, Zhana Royia, Audrey Martells, Gil Polk, Sam Stevens, Deborah Cooper and Keith Fluitt. Now, thanks to Radikal Records’ release of “Perfect Bitch” by DJ/producer Tony Moran and singer Jason Walker, Greenly has become along with them a contender for a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording. The song hit #2 on the Billboard Dance Club chart for Sept. 14, 2019 – topped that week only by Sting, a worthy competitor indeed. Named as the 92nd-most successful dance artist of all time by Billboard in December, 2016, Moran worked with Greenly in creating “Perfect Bitch”. The team has also collaborated on a dozen other songs, some yet to be released. Already they have accomplished two #1 Dance Club hits by Walker: “Say Yes” which hit that pinnacle on Dec. 17, 2016 and “I’m In Love With You” on Aug. 18, 2018. Besides this work, the prolific lyricist’s achievements with Kimberly Davis prompted four additional Billboard hits. These included a #1 for “My Fire”, written with Moran and Martells, featuring CHIC founder/music legend Nile Rodgers. “Life is a Dancefloor” –- written with Moran, Ryan Shaw and Martells and produced by the Shapeshifters, led by English house producer Simon Marlin — is Greenly’s latest creation for Davis. It became a #10 Dance Club hit at the same time (July 20, 2019) that Walker’s “Perfect Bitch” hit #29 and was still rising. As legendary Disco DJ Tony Smith (host of Sirius XM radio’s “Studio 54 Classic Beats & Rhythms” show) noted. “I love working with Mike’s lyrics. They feel authentic, based on real human truth. That’s got to be one of the reasons his words connect so well with artists.” Smith has produced remixes to several dance tracks with Greenly’s work. Now, the lyricist’s hopes are focused on “Perfect Bitch” as a candidate for the Grammy nom as Best Dance Recording. “Jason Walker is a phenomenal talent,” Greenly says. “People can tell that the moment they hear him sing. It was great to have two charted hits at once, and I’m honored by the support I’m receiving for ‘Perfect Bitch’ as a potential Grammy contender. And then to have Natalie Jean’s work getting such attention… It’s all beyond my expectation!”

Jackman’s performance as the charismatic Tassone has been praised as a career-high by multiple critics.

  • Bad Education is written by Mike Makowsky (I Think We’re Alone Now), who grew up in Roslyn, Long Island during the scandal and drew from the New York Magazine long read article “The Bad Superintendent” by Robert Kolker.

THE OFF-BROADWAY BILLIE HOLIDAY THEATRE ANNOUNCES THE WORLD PREMIERE OF REPARATIONS

BY JAMES SHELDON AND DIRECTED BY MICHELE SHAY WITH LISA ARRINDELL, KAMAL BOLDEN, GYS DE VILLIERS AND ALEXANDRA NEIL

A CENTERPIECE OF THE INAUGURAL NEW WINDOWS FESTIVAL

The Billie Holiday Theatre Artistic and Executive Director Dr. Indira Etwaroo announced the theatre’s world premiere of James Sheldon’s Reparations, a centerpiece of the inaugural New Windows Festival, a major highlight of The Billie’s 2019-2020 season.

The world premiere of Reparations marks the sixth production of Sheldon’s plays, which include Shiverman, nominated as Best Play of 2012 by London’s Off-West End Awards.  Directed by Tony Award-nominee Michele Shay (August Wilson’s Seven Guitars and Raisin in the Sun on Broadway, The Old Settler at The Billie, 2018 AUDELCO-winning Best Revival of the Year) Reparations stars Lisa Arrindell (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof on Broadway, A Lesson Before Dying, Madea’s Family Reunion), Kamal Bolden (The Resident, Chicago Fire, Rosewood), Alexandra Neil (Madoff, and Rock 'n' Roll and Match on Broadway), and Gys de Villiers (Mandela Long Walk to Freedom, Vehicle 19, It Gets Better).

Previews begin October 25, 2019 with Opening Night on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 and running through November 24, 2019 at The Billie Holiday Theatre, 1368 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, NY 11216.

Reparations tells the story of a recently widowed white book editor (Alexandra Neil) who invites a younger black writer (Kamal Bolden) to her apartment, only to find that a night of tenderness and passion turns into a tumultuous morning-after when he threatens to reveal a dark secret from her past. As family friends – played by Lisa Arrindell and Gys de Villiers - join them for an Upper East Side lunch, we discover whether the young writer will succeed in claiming his “reparations” for a life of racial injustice and personal betrayal.

“The Billie continues to celebrate the triumph of the human spirit, which remains at the core of the African American experience during this 400 th commemorative year of the beginning of slavery in America. We enter this season with a profound understanding that the African American story is the very foundation of the American story,” stated Indira Etwaroo. “With New Windows and Reparations, the Black experience is the complex perspective through which we view the world and our relationship to it in order to inspire and generate deeply necessary and critical cross-cultural dialogues. These artists - James, Michele, Luba, Hollis, Maria - join us in Bed-Stuy, as we continue to peel back the layers of the status quo in the arts and to tackle issues of race, identity, equity, and equality through the creative process in ways that tear down walls, not build them.

“With Reparations, we have created a provocative examination of race in America and of the lenses through which we see each other, and I am excited to bring James’ story and The Billie’s vision for this piece to life,” stated director Michele Shay. “ I have always gravitated to stories that are unique, brave, honest, and that challenge and push the audience. I was drawn to Reparations because it is disruptive in the best way possible.

You have a white playwright, a black director, and a Black-led institution - dedicated to telling the stories of those across the African diaspora with the hope that Reparations will challenge age-old divisions and embrace our shared humanity.

The artistic team includes Moriah and Isabel Curley-Clay as a set and prop designers, and David Moodey as a lighting designer with Sam Potochick as Production Stage Manager, Yohanna Florentine as Assistant Stage Manager, and Emma Pearl Nigut as Assistant Director. Casting by Anne Davison.

New Windows Festival goes beyond racial differences to explore the intersectionality and complexity of identity and to spotlight voices and perspectives that have not historically been presented at The Billie with bold and daring storytelling that centralizes themes of race, social justice, and equity within the human struggle for understanding and truth.
