NEON Nabs U.S. Rights to Tom Harper's WILD ROSE from Entertainment One

NEON NABS US RIGHTS TO TOM HARPER’S WILD ROSE FROM ENTERTAINMENT ONE

WILD ROSE FEATURES A BREAKOUT PERFORMANCE BY JESSIE BUCKLEY AS ASPIRING COUNTRY MUSIC SINGER

FILM WAS FINANCED BY eOne, BFI FILM FUND CREATIVE SCOTLAND AND FILM4.

Toronto (September 9, 2018) - After an all-night negotiation, NEON is excited to announce it has nabbed US rights to Tom Harper’s WILD ROSE which premiered Saturday evening at Toronto International Film Festival to a rapturous standing ovation. The inspiring musical dramedy features a breakout performance by Jessie Buckley as aspiring country music singer Rose-Lynn Harlan who dreams of leaving her dreary life in Glasgow for America's country music capital, Nashville. Faye Ward produced the film via her Fable Pictures banner and it was financed by Entertainment One (eOne), BFI Film Fund, Creative Scotland and Film4.

The film stars Jessie Buckley in a dazzling performance as Rose-Lynn, the always incredible Julie Walters as Rose’s mother and Sophie Okonedo as Rose’s very lovely, very posh employer. With an adept hand, Tom Harper directs Nicole Taylor’s beautifully complicated, nuanced screenplay, written as a love letter to her hometown of Glasgow. Natascha Wharton, Leslie Finlay, Alison Owen, Xavier Marchand and Polly Stokes executive produced the film. eOne will distribute the film directly across its footprint, including Canada and plans to release the film in the U.K. in February of 2019.

WILD ROSE tells the complicated story of Rose-Lynn, a woman on a quest to become a country music star, while also grappling with the responsibilities of being recently released from prison and a young mother of two children.

NEON says, “We were absolutely blown away by the stunning performances of this almost-all female cast. For us, the story is about so much more than the incredible music - it examines the sometimes-conflicting relationships between mothers and their children and explores the realities of pursuing one’s dreams in the face of responsibility.” They added, “NEON couldn’t be more excited to introduce these characters and Jessie Buckley to audiences."

The domestic deal was negotiated by NEON with CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group on behalf of the filmmakers. International sales of the film are being handled by eOne’s Sierra/Affinity who will distribute to the rest of the world outside of eOne territories.

It incorporates elements of evolution, emergence, energy, psychology, to show how these effect our environment, our planet. It’s not fear that should drive us to act. It’s love. Like Teddy Roosevelt said “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”

Living in the Future’s Past is a bright and intellectually honest film,” says Director Susan Kucera. “As Jeff says in the film “it all sounds pretty trippy, and it is” but the film allows us to get friendly with our natural ability to reason.”

Senior Vice President of Programming for Trafalgar Releasing, Kymberli Frueh, comments: “With so much conversation around conservation and what we can do personally to protect our environment for future generations, this is a perfect social cause documentary that is meant to educate, inspire and create dialogue among attendees on a community level at local cinemas.”

VALPARAISO PICTURES LAUNCHES; ELIZABETH CHOMKO TO ADAPT “AFTER PERFECT” WITH MATT REEVES TO PRODUCE

David Carrico today announced the launch of his Los Angeles-based film and television development, production and finance banner Valparaiso Pictures.  As an incubator for edgy, eccentric, and diverse content, the new venture is setting out to create opportunities for distinct voices in drama, comedy and genre, enabling and championing creatives to find their audience.  The banner’s first project is After Perfect, written by Elizabeth Chomko (What They Had). Valparaiso is producing the adaptation alongside Matt Reeves’ banner 6th & Idaho Productions and Joshua Thurston.

Based on bestselling author Christina McDowell’s memoir of the same name, After Perfect is a cautionary tale about one family’s destruction in the wake of the Wall Street implosion. Foundry Literary + Media handled the book rights on behalf of McDowell.

“We’re so excited to be launching Valparaiso with After Perfect and the talented Elizabeth,” said Carrico.  “It’s an exciting time in the media industry, and we’re thrilled to be here to champion our fellow filmmakers, whether it’s finding untold stories to bring to the screen, or enabling burgeoning writers and filmmakers to take creative risks.”

Chomko most recently wrote and directed Bleecker Street’s What They Had starring Hilary Swank, Michael Shannon and Taissa Farmiga.  The film, Chomko’s directorial debut, will be making its international Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Carrico is an entrepreneur and venture capitalist who previously co-founded CMG LLC, a music and entertainment technology consulting firm; EvntLive Inc, a digital interactive concert platform that was acquired by Yahoo! in 2013; and PrimeMind, Inc, a digital media company.  Carrico has also invested in and advised more than 20 startups across a variety of industries.

During his tenure, Hoppey managed the film division's slate and worked closely with the company's talent management division and clients, including Dakota and Elle Fanning.

The company is in active development on a slate of projects as well as adapting shorts into feature length films and TV projects. In addition to After Perfect, Valparaiso Pictures is also behind shorts such as Lucas Amann’s Peopling and Stranger Thing’s writer & Blacklist alum Kate Trefry’s How to Be Alone with Maika Monroe, and James Gallaghers’ Love, starring Susan Sarandon and Boris McGiver.

GAL GADOT TO VOICE NEW CHARACTER SHANK IN “RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET”

Gal Gadot (“Justice League,” “Wonder Woman”) revealed today that she is voicing the character Shank, a tough and talented driver in an intense and gritty online racing game called Slaughter Race, in Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” which hits theaters this Thanksgiving.

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GalGadot/videos/10156557751228926/
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/BmTXop7A1Nl/?taken-by=gal_gadot

Ralph and Vanellope encounter Shank and her unusual cohorts when they venture to the internet in search of a replacement part for Vanellope’s game, Sugar Rush. Shank, a tough-as-nails street racer, takes her role and her tricked-out car very seriously and doesn’t like to lose. When Vanellope finds herself in a street race with Shank, her Sugar Rush driving skills are put to the test—and Shank is impressed. “She is the coolest character in this world of Slaughter Race,” said director Rich Moore. “Shank’s lived a lot, she’s seen a lot, yet she’s got nothing but kindness in her heart—that’s the duality of that character.”

Said Gadot, “Shank is amazing at driving cars and has this bad-girl vibe to her. But as the movie goes on you realize how fun, wise and warm she really is on the inside, which is what I like most about her.”

According to director/writer Phil Johnston, Gadot adds extraordinary dimension to the character. “There's so much texture to her voice and so much living in her voice,” he said. “If Ralph is Vanellope's big-brother figure, we wanted a big-sister figure. We wanted someone that Vanellope would look up to, and Gal is definitely someone kids—and a lot of adults I know—aspire to emulate. I can't imagine anyone else embodying that part.”

Shank’s approach to racing—and life in general—opens Vanellope’s eyes to the limitless possibilities of the internet and the excitement of a new world that feels like home to her. Featuring the voices of John C. Reilly as Ralph, and Sarah Silverman as Vanellope, “Ralph Breaks the Internet” opens in U.S. theaters on Nov. 21, 2018.

ACCLAIMED PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER SAFE HARBOUR TO MAKE U.S. DEBUT ON HULU

Hulu has boarded the critically acclaimed Australian series Safe Harbour for its U.S. debut as a Hulu Original Series. In a deal with NBCUniversal Television and New Media Distribution, the four-part event drama is the latest internationally-produced series to join Hulu’s growing slate of thought-provoking original series, and will make its debut on August 24th.

Safe Harbour will stream on Hulu alongside a growing list of successful international co-productions including the Peabody Award-winning National Treasure, as well as its relevant, provocative original dramas like the Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning The Handmaid’s Tale and Emmy-nominated The Looming Tower. Since co-producing and launching series such as Hard Sun and Harlots, consumption of high-caliber international dramas on Hulu has tripled over the past year alone.

Safe Harbour tells the story of five Australians on a yachting holiday from Darwin to Indonesia, whose idyllic vacation takes a disastrous turn when they come across a broken-down fishing boat, full of desperate asylum seekers. The Australians decide to help, towing the refugees, but when they wake the next morning the fishing boat is gone. Five years later they meet some of the refugees again and learn the truth. Someone cut the rope between the two boats and, as a result, seven people died when the fishing boat sank. The revelation drives a wedge of mistrust between the Australians, as they grapple with protecting themselves and doing the right thing. The refugees struggle with their desire for justice and, possibly, revenge. As each group struggles to find the truth and old secrets come to light, one question hangs over it all – who cut the rope?

As each hour-long episode unfolds, Safe Harbour reveals how a single action can have a ripple effect - building to tsunami proportions - and begging the question: “what would you do in this situation?” The story sparks conversation and challenges the viewer to think about the contemporary issues around immigration today.

Safe Harbour stars an ensemble featuring Phoebe Tonkin (The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, H2O Just Add Water), AACTA and Logie award-winner Joel Jackson (Peter Allen: Not the Boy Next Door, Deadline Gallipoli), award-winning actor Ewen Leslie (Rake, Janet KingTop of the LakeChina Girl), Leeanna Walsman (Seven Types of Ambiguity, Cleverman, Looking for Alibrandi), Jacqueline McKenzie (The 4400, The Water Diviner), Logie award-winner Hazem Shammas (Underbelly), Nicole Chamoun (Kick) and Robert Rabiah (Tomorrow When the War Began).

The series is produced by NBCUniversal International Studios’ Matchbox Pictures (The Family Law, Secret City, Seven Types of Ambiguity, Wanted, Barracuda) with major production funding from Screen Australia, in association with Screen Queensland. Debbie Lee (The Heights, Mustangs FC), Sue Masters (The Family Law, Deep Water) and Belinda Chayko (Barracuda, Secret City) are Executive Producers. Belinda also serves as writer, alongside Matt Cameron (Sunshine, Secret City) and Phil Enchelmaier (Jar Dwellers). Glendyn Ivin (Seven Types of Ambiguity, Hunters) is director.  NBCUniversal is handling international sales.

You never know what you'll find out in the middle of the ocean. Safe Harbour, a Hulu Original Series, premieres 8/24. ABOUT SAFE HARBOUR On a yachting holiday from Darwin to Indonesia, five Australians come across a broken-down fishing boat, full of desperate asylum seekers.
