In the wake of the election, The Secret Life of Muslims is a new digital series that uses humor and empathy to confront Islamophobia. The series was created by Executive Producer Joshua Seftel, an Emmy-winning filmmaker (War, Inc., Queer Eye, This American Life), who is joined by Executive Producer Reza Aslan, NYTimes bestselling author and frequent commentator on CNN, NPR, Meet the Press, and The Daily Show. 

Each week, through February 2017, a new episode will launch and can be viewed on the Vox Facebook, SLOM Facebook, Vox YouTube pages, CBS Sunday Morning,and on the USA TODAY Network.  The first four episodes are now available: What is a Muslim?, Khalid Latif: Saluted in uniform, harassed as a civilian, Rais Bhuiyan: This Muslim American Fought to Save his Attacker’s Life, and Ahmed Ahmed: An American Muslim comedian on being typecast as a terrorist with 10 more to follow.

“After such a divisive election, we need to come together and start telling stories that add truth and nuance to what was stoked on the campaign trail,” says Executive Producer Joshua Seftel.  Seftel, a Jew, assembled a team of Muslims, Christians, Jews, Atheists, and others to create films that confront Islamophobia through the words of Muslim Americans.  “As a boy, I faced anti-Semitism growing up Jewish in Upstate New York and that stayed with me. It's deeply upsetting to see the kind of anti-Muslim discrimination that’s happening right now in the U.S., so if we can help create understanding in some small way, that would be a great step.”

With the support of the Ford Foundation/JustFilms, Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, The New York Community Trust, Pillars Fund, and an advisory board that includes bestselling author Dave Eggers and executive producer Howard Gordon (24, Homeland), the series has brought together a unique coalition, determined to uproot Islamophobia in America.

In 1963, director Herschell Gordon Lewis pulled a cow's tongue out of an actress' mouth on camera, and in doing so, changed the landscape of horror cinema forever. That sequence was just one of numerous gruesome gags featured in Blood Feast, the film credited as being the world's first gore movie. It's no exaggeration to say that the modern gross-out movies of today owe their very existence to the pioneering efforts of H.G. Lewis. But whilst Lewis is most widely celebrated for his blood-and-guts epics (Two Thousand Maniacs!, The Wizard of Gore et al.), there's more to the prolific director than splatter.

HELL’S KITCHEN is looking for the next batch of talented, passionate and skilled chefs to work with Chef Ramsay in the hottest kitchen on earth. Bello arrived in a chic lipstick red suit and red silk blouse with bow detail complemented by turquoise drop earrings while Parker Posey donned stylish black harem pants with a textured shirt and tousled hair that withstood the evening drizzle. The three cozied up inside the venue while continuing conversation over passed plates of STK’s shaved Brussels sprouts salad, crispy rock shrimp with chili remoulade and tuna tartare with soy, honey emulsion and taro chips.

Jennifer Connelly received an award from American Pastoral co-star and director Ewan McGregor. The fashionable friends made a statement with Connelly in a fitted colour-blocked Louis Vuitton dress and McGregor in a black t-shirt and slacks with leather jacket. McGregor gave a warm speech complimenting Connelly on her courageous independent film work. After accepting the award and sharing a heartfelt embrace, the two slipped back to their dinner table as the guests were enjoying STK’s dry aged strip steak accompanied by local heirloom tomato fondue, roasted squash and goat cheese truffled mash potato au jus.

Additional cast members of American Pastoral, Uzo Aduba and Dakota Fanning also rubbed shoulders with the star-studded crowd. Fanning went on to honour Aduba for her commitment to creativity in the arts. Aduba, best known for her role as ‘Crazy Eyes’ in “Orange is the New Black,” was wearing a black dress with ruffled collar and shared a laugh with Fanning over their very first meeting when Fanning summoned her from a deep sleep just to meet her on set.

Nick Cannon, in town for his directorial debut with King of Dancehall, strode in and charmed the photographers wearing a black suit with a matching studded turban adding flair to his outfit. The charismatic personality received a Creative Coalition honour from venerable Academy Award® Winner Louis Gossett Jr. Gossett Jr. praised Cannon for shining the spotlight on impoverished Haiti by filming there.

Beals’ heartfelt admiration for Demme’s willingness to support projects of creative community members from all walks of life, including her photography was palpable.

Irish director Terry George, Director of Armenian genocide film The Promise, commanded laughs and loud cheers of support upon losing his train of thought when presenting an award to Jim Sheridan. George explained his moment of silence saying “Sorry, I was lost in my thoughts. I was just thinking that Canada should build a wall and make America pay for it!”

Christopher Guest, director of Netflix improve-style comedy Mascots, was also seen chatting with Ron Chapman, Maria Bello and Parker Posey while guests enjoyed flourless Valrohna chocolate cake with salted caramel ice cream.

Director Rob COhen's CATEGORY 5 STARTS Shooting

Director Rob Cohen (the originator of “The Fast and the Furious” “xXx” and “Mummy 3”) begins shooting “CATEGORY 5” today on location in Sofia, Bulgaria. Cinematographer Shelly Johnson, ASC (“Captain America: The First Avenger”, and “Jurassic Park III”) will photograph and Niven Howie (“Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels”) will edit. Elia Popov of GEM Effects (Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation) will create the storm on set, while the Academy Award winning VFX house, Double Negative, will do all the CGI work.

“If I could put seatbelts in cinemas, I would,” says Cohen. With exhilarating practical effects and bone-shaking action sequences many designed to be shot in-camera, the director promises his most intense picture since kicking off the “Fast” franchise, Universal’s biggest of all time, in 2001. The screenplay was written by Rob Cohen, Scott Windhauser, and Jeff Dixon, and is based on a script by Carlos Davis and Anthony Fingleton.

The action/adventure revolves around a troubled storm chaser, played by BAFTA-nominated Toby Kebbell (“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” “Warcraft” and “Ben Hur”), and a head-strong female treasury agent with a past, played by SAG-winner Maggie Grace (‘Twilight” ‘The Taken Trilogy”, “Lost”), who must survive the storm, save the hostages and stop the thieves from executing their daring heist, all while surviving 160 mph winds, horizontal rains, floods and collapsing buildings. Kebbell and Grace are joined by co-stars Ryan Kwanten (“True Blood”), and Ralph Ineson (“Harry Potter” film franchise, and “Guardians of the Galaxy”).

Five lead contestants emerge: A mouse (Seth MacFarlane) who croons as smoothly as he cons, a timid teenage elephant (Tori Kelly) with an enormous case of stage fright, an overtaxed mother (Academy Award® winner Reese Witherspoon) run ragged tending a litter of 25 piglets, a young gangster gorilla (Taron Egerton) looking to break free of his family’s felonies, and a punk-rock porcupine (Scarlett Johansson) struggling to shed her arrogant boyfriend and go solo.  Each animal arrives under Buster’s marquee believing that this is their shot to change the course of their life.
 
Featuring more than 85 hit songs, Sing is written and directed by Garth Jennings (Son of Rambow, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) and produced by Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy.  Released by Universal Pictures, Sing arrives in theaters for the holiday season on December 21, 2016.
