STRATFORD ON HOUSTON at Film Forum, January 13-21

STRATFORD ON HOUSTON, a nine-day, 11-film festival of classic Shakespeare screen adaptations commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death, will run at Film Forum from Wednesday, January 13 through Thursday, January 21

Following a twelve-day run of Orson Welles’ long-unavailable masterpiece Chimes at Midnight (January 1-12; see earlier press release), the series kicks off on Wednesday, January 13 with two of Welles’ earlier Shakespeare adaptations: his original director’s cut of Macbeth, or the so-called “Scottish version,” with the actors speaking the lines with thick Scottish accents (later drastically cut and dubbed into “American” for general release), and his magnificent Othello, winner of the Grand Prize at Cannes – with Welles starring in the title role of both films.

The series includes three of the great Shakespeare adapations directed by and starring Laurence Olivier: his multi-Oscar-winning (Best Picture, Actor, Art Direction, Costumes) Hamlet; the wartime Technicolor tour-de-force Henry V; and a ravishing new 4K color restoration of Richard III, co-starring Ralph Richardson, John Gielgud, and Claire Bloom.

STRATFORD ON HOUSTON also includes Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet, with Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey as the ill-fated couple (perhaps the first actors of the correct age to play them), the most commercially successful Shakespearean movie adaptation ever; Zeffirelli’s underrated Taming of the Shrew, starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor; Throne of BloodMacbeth transposed by Akira Kurosawa to medieval Japan, starring the great Toshiro Mifune and Isuzu Yamada (as “Lady Macbeth”); Joseph L. Mankiewicz’ Julius Caesar, with Marlon Brando as Marc Antony and an all-star cast inlcuding James Mason and Deborah Kerr; and a 4K restoration of Roman Polanski’s own adaptation of Macbeth, produced by Hugh Hefner and notable for its prodigious use of sex and violence. The series also includes a new restoration of Forbidden Planet, Shakespeare’s The Tempest in outer space, starring Walter Pidgeon, Leslie Nielsen, Anne Francis, and “Robby the Robot.”

DREAMS REWIRED, Narrated by Tilda Swinton, Opens Wed, December 16 at Film Forum

8DREAMSREWIRED2050.jpg

Film Forum is pleased to present the world theatrical premiere of DREAMS REWIRED, beginning Wednesday, December 16, for a 9-day engagement. Tilda Swinton takes us on a dense, poetic journey through the history of connectivity – from radio, the phonograph, movies, television, and the telephone to today’s digital age. Drawing upon nearly 200 films made between the 1880s and 1930s, the film is an amazing collage of the scientific, dramatic, educational, erotic, experimental, and political. Rare archival materials share screen time with clips from Eisenstein’s BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN, Dreyer’s VAMPYR and movies by Thomas Edison, Dziga Vertov, Hans Richter, Walter Rutmann, René Clair, Louis Feuillade, Rudy Burckhardt, and the great silent comic masters. Melding fantasy and fact, this treasure trove of brilliantly selected bits and pieces cumulatively tells the story of technology’s inexorable march into the 21st century.

Manu Luksch, Martin Reinhart, and Thomas Tode, the triumvirate credited for the film’s direction, combine backgrounds in art installation, experimental filmmaking, cinematic invention (both “hardware and processing solutions”), and curatorial activities. Their areas of expertise extend from the Bauhaus and the effects of network technologies, to the Soviet avant-garde, and films on architecture and archeology.

DREAMS REWIRED plays Wednesday, December 16 – Thursday, December 24, at Film Forum, 209 West Houston Street (West of 6th Avenue), with screenings daily at: 12:30, 2:40, 4:50, 7:15, and 9:20.

Howard Hawks' BALL OF FIRE at Film Forum, December 25-31

ARCHIVAL 35mm PRINT

FILM FORUM'S CHRISTMAS WEEK CLASSIC
DECEMBER 25-31

FREE BUBBLY ON NEW YEAR'S EVE!

Howard Hawks’ BALL OF FIRE (1941), a classic screwball comedy starring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck and written by Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett, will be shown in an archival 35mm print at Film Forum for one week beginning on Christmas Day and playing through New Year’s Eve.

“Let's get ourselves a couple drinks, light the fire maybe, and you can start working on me right away…” cheerfully suggests Barbara Stanwyck’s hotcha stripper “Sugarpuss” O’Shea to Gary Cooper’s Professor Hiram Potts. Of course they’re just settling in for a research session for the slang section of the all-encompassing encyclopedia he and six other supremely unworldly professors having been slaving away at in their foundation-endowed brownstone for the last nine years. But what’s Stanwyck doing there? There’s no better place to hole up when you’re on the run from both the DA’s men and your own “boyfriend,” Dana Andrews, whose idea of sweet talk, according to henchman Dan Duryea, is “he gets more bang outta' you than any dame he ever knew.” (How did they get this stuff past the censor?)

Wilder and Brackett’s playful adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (in-jokingly noted on a background movie marquee) has Stanwyck going on a wisecrack whirlwind and Cooper tossing off academic gobbledygook, as well as an almost painfully sincere declaration of love, with the great DP Gregg Toland (Citizen Kane) giving it all a surprisingly lustrous sheen — plus jazz legend Gene Krupa’s “Drum Boogie” solo… with matchsticks.

On Thursday, December 31, filmgoers are invited to “Spend New Year’s Eve with Stanwyck and Coop!” All attendees at the 7:30 and 9:45 shows will receive free bubbly in the Film Forum lobby following the screenings.

TRUE CRIME Festival At Film Forum, July 10 – August 5

Four-Week, 50-Film Festival At Film Forum, July 10 – August 5
***
Kicks Off With New 4K Restoration Of In Cold Blood
***
Series Includes Bonnie And Clyde, Badlands,10 Rillington Place, Rope, Lucky Luciano, Stavisky,Many Others
***

“TRUE CRIME,” a four-week, 50-film festival of movies based on real events, will run at Film Forum from Friday, July 10 through Wednesday, August 5.The festival includes movies by directors Alfred Hitchcock, Fritz Lang, Howard Hawks, Elia Kazan, Robert Wise, Nicholas Ray, Budd Boetticher, Phil Karlson, Richard Fleischer, Roger Corman, John Frankenheimer, Arthur Penn, Sidney Lumet, John Milius, Don Siegel, Francesco Rosi, Shôhei Imamura, Nagisa Ôshima, Brian De Palma, William Friedkin, Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, Martin Scorsese, and Terrence Malick.

The festival kicks off July 10 & 11 (Friday & Saturday) with a stunning new 4K restoration of Richard Brooks’ In Cold Blood, starring Robert Blake and Scott Wilson as real-life killers Perry Smith and Richard Hickock, who in 1959 broke into the home of a prosperous Kansas farmer – ostensibly to commit burglary – but then systematically slaughtered the farmer and his family. Adapted from Truman Capote’s legendary “non-fiction novel,” In Cold Blood’s ruthlessly realistic treatment has arguably never been topped, with Conrad Hall’s b&w photography giving a near-documentary feel (the murders were shot in the actual rooms in which they took place) – and with even the intricate parallel editing of the multiple storylines reproducing the book’s pacing. See below for press screening date.

Other 4K restorations in the festival include Terrence Malick’s Badlands; Arthur Penn’s Bonnie and Clyde, starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway in the title roles; Richard Fleischer’s 10 Rillington Place, based on the case of British serial killer John Christie (played by Richard Attenborough); and two films by the late Italian director Francesco Rosi, both starring Gian Maria Volonté, The Mattei Affair and Lucky Luciano.

Additional highlights of the festival include:

· Two versions of M, inspired by infamous Düsseldorf murderer Peter Kürten: Fritz Lang’s 1931 classic, starring Peter Lorre, and the rare 1951 remake by Joseph Losey, starring David Wayne.

· Silents based on true crimes: Hitchcock’s The Lodger, loosely based on the Jack the Ripper case, and Clarence Brown’s The Goose Woman, based on events tangential to the sensational Hall-Mills case of the 1920s. Both screenings feature live piano accompaniment by Steve Sterner.

· Early talkies: Howard Hawks’ Scarface, with Paul Muni as a gangster based on Al Capone, and Mervyn LeRoy’s hard-hitting I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang, based on the memoir by Robert Elliott Burns (the publicity around the movie led to his re-incarceration).

· Explicit true crime: Nagisa Ôshima’s hardcore sadomasochistic dramaIn the Realm of the Senses, based on the Sada Abe case, Leonard Kastle’s The Honeymoon Killers, with Shirley Stoler and Tony Lo Bianco as the notorious “Lonely Hearts” murderers, and John McNaughton’s “profoundly disturbing” (Pauline Kael) Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, which helped bring about the NC-17 rating. Henrydirector McNaughton will introduce the movie via Skype (see listing below) from his home in Chicago.

· Three films based on the Leopold and Loeb case of the 1920s: Alfred Hitchcock’s 1948 Rope; Richard Fleischer’s 1959 Compulsion, with Orson Welles as the defense attorney based on Clarence Darrow; and Tom Kalin’s moodily homoerotic 1992 take on the case, Swoon. Director Kalin will introduce one of the Film Forum screenings (see below).

· Iconic performances by Al Pacino and Robert De Niro: Pacino in Lumet’s Serpico and Dog Day Afternoon, and Mike Newell’s Donnie Brasco, and De Niro in Scorsese’s Casino and De Palma’s The Untouchables.

· Over ten double features (2-for-1 admission), including Hitchcock’sThe Wrong Man and Kazan’s Boomerang!; William Friedkin’s The French Connection and The Brink’s Job; John Milius’ Dillinger, starring Warren Oates in the title role, and Don Siegel’s Escape from Alcatraz; and more!

· True crime from around the world: Shôhei Imamura’s Vengeance is Mine; Bong Joon-Ho’s Memories of Murder, based on Korea’s first serial killer case; Tadashi Imai’s Darkness at Noon; Alain Resnais’Stavisky, with Jean-Paul Belmondo as the 1930s swindler; Giuliano Montaldo’s Sacco and Vanzetti, based on the 1926 case of the two Italian immigrants accused of a lethal bombing in Braintree, Massachusetts; and Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures, with Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey in their film debuts, as two matricidal friends.

· AND MANY MORE! See below for complete list of films in schedule format.

TRUE CRIME was programmed by Bruce Goldstein, Film Forum’s Director of Repertory Programming.
