Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights Returns in 2019 Bigger, Brighter and Greener

  • Bigger, Brighter and Greener – Holiday Celebration to Light Up the Bronx

  • from November 21 to January 5

  • Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights is sponsored by Con Edison

As one of New York City’s greatest holiday traditions and for the first time since 2007, the Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights will return in 2019 during the most festive time of the year with dazzling light displays that will cover and sparkle acres of the zoo. Visitors will be able to walk through the zoo to experience wildlife-themed LED displays, custom Asian lanterns, animated light shows on the historic Astor Court and more.

“We are bringing an updated version of a beloved holiday tradition back to the Bronx Zoo for the first time since 2007,” said John F. Calvelli, WCS Executive Vice President of Public Affairs. “The LED lights, animal-themed lanterns, and animated light shows will be set amongst the historic buildings on an expanded footprint that will take people throughout the zoo. The LED technology will also allow us to be incredibly energy efficient. We believe our visitors will come away really enjoying this ‘green’ holiday experience!”

Visitors can celebrate the holiday season with an enchanting adventure to warm up the entire family.

Festivities will include:

  • The Ice Jubilee at the Bronx Zoo Includes an Ice Bar, Ice Throne & Ice Slide (December 21 to 31) – Holiday revelers will be able to take festive photo ops on the ice throne, where ice kings and queens can take their seat on an oversized throne made completely of ice, as well as breaking out your inner penguin and slide down a 20-foot ice slide. Visitors can also grab a specialty cocktail at the zoo’s 12-foot ice bar which will be available for purchase during Holiday Lights operating hours.

  • Nightly Ice Carving Demonstrations (Ongoing) – Throughout Holiday Lights from 5 to 9 pm, professional ice carvers will debut their talents as they use chainsaws and chisels to carve holiday and animal-themed sculptures with a live audience. All finished sculptures will be on display throughout the Dancing Crane Plaza.

  • Ice Carving Competition (December 28) – On Saturday, December 28 from 6 to 9 pm, the zoo will take ice carving to the next level when five professional ice sculptures will create 20 sculptures in an elimination style “speed carving” format over a three-hour period. This format is ideal for spectators to witness carvings formed in less than 30 minutes before their eyes. The competition will be emceed by an experienced carver to entertain the crowd and provide fun facts, as well as facilitating spectator participation. Visitors can also get involved in the carving judging. The 20 new sculptures will be displayed for future viewing.

  • Carolers, Characters, Train Rides & Lantern Safari – Visitors will be able to enjoy classic and modern holiday tunes sung by Victorian-dressed live carolers throughout the zoo, as well as taking photos with some of the zoo’s seasonal characters including lions, giraffes, gorillas, penguins and a friendly snowman. Families can also take a journey “around the world” along a dedicated section of the park that will be illuminated by hand-created lantern sculptures, while also learning about the work WCS scientists are doing to help save various species. Train rides will also be available for the whole family at Astor Court.

Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights is sponsored by Con Edison.

Tickets for the Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights are priced at $29.95 for adults, $22.95 for children, and $28.95 for seniors.

Hours for Holiday Lights will be 5 to 9 pm Sunday to Thursday, and 5 to 10 pm Friday and Saturday.

Holiday Lights will be closed on December 24. The Bronx Zoo and Holiday Lights will be closed on December 25 and January 1.

World Premiere of “WOKE” and “From Then to Now” a Compilation of Repertory Favorites,

NYC Premiere of “Bach 25” plus, Return of “Star Dust” - The Ballet Tribute to David Bowie

February 19–March 3, 2019

Complexions Contemporary Ballet (Complexions) celebrates its 25th anniversary season at The Joyce Theater in New York City from February 19-March 3, 2019.Under the artistic direction of Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson, the company will celebrate this milestone anniversary with three dynamic programs over a two-week span. Filled with a roster of some of the most diverse and exciting young stars, Complexions explodes onto the Joyce Theater stage with their signature style of athleticism, virtuosity and passion that has excited audiences for a quarter century.

In the first week’s program (Program A), Complexions will present the NYC premiere of “BACH 25.” Set to the music of Johann Sebastian and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, the work features the entire company in continuous movement to the Baroque composers’ dramatic violin and cello. A festive, athletic, neo- classical work in the signature style of Complexions this romantic, playful, and intensely physical piece celebrates the union of music and movement. Returning this season due to popular demand is the runaway hit “Star Dust,” a ballet tribute to the genre-bending innovation of one of the most prolific rock stars of all time, David Bowie. This full company ballet takes an array of Bowie’s hits and lays a visual imprint inspired by his unique persona and restless artistic invention, resulting in a rock opera production in his honor.

In the second week (Program B), the company will present the world premiere of “WOKE,” a physical reaction to the daily news. A bold and dynamic socially conscious one act ballet featuring the full company that examines our humanity in conjunction with today’s political climate. This work is inspired by the enlightened awareness and challenging moral compass of today’s generation. In honor of their 25th anniversary, the company will present “From Then to Now,” an amalgamation of audience favorites spanning the rich 25-year history of the company. Highlights will include excerpts from classics such as “Rise” featuring music of U2 (2008), and “The Grapes of Wrath” (1995) among other audience favorites.

All matinee programs (Matinee) will feature “Bach 25” and “From Then to Now.”

During the run, Thursday, February 21 will be dedicated to Complexions’ annual fundraising gala. Proceeds from this gala benefit performance will continue to help build Complexions’ educational initiatives through scholarships, mentorship programs and the continued development of Rhoden’s and Richardson’s methodology of dance training. Complexion’s educational initiatives were offered in six cities this past year, allowing the company the ability to mentor and train hundreds of dancers. The gala will give audiences an opportunity to see the next generation of performers as they grace the Joyce stage. In addition to the company performing, there will be a new work performed by the students of Complexions’ pre-professional program and students from New Orleans Ballet Association and performance from Complexions’ Artistic Director Desmond Richardson.

7 FREE things to do for New Year's Eve in NYC!

New York City and New Year's Eve have lot more in common than just sounding similar by being called NYC and NYE! NYC is synonymous with NYE celebrations, the best known and most popular event being the New Year's BALL DROP at TIMES SQUARE. But if you do not have the patience to stay out like that for hours and hours, in this freezing East Coast cold, there are few other FREE things that you could do to celebrate New Year's Eve in New York City.

  • NYRR Midnight Run & Fireworks in Central Park: It's not FREE to participate in the run, but it is free to watch and party in Central Park. The party starts at 10 pm, with a LIVE DJ. And you enjoy the amazing fireworks too. You can also go and do some ice skating at Wollman Rink.
  • Staten Island Ferry Ride: It's a fun ride (for FREE!) to take any time of the year, but on New Year's Eve, you can enjoy the fireworks in Manhattan (also Brooklyn and Jersey City) while admiring the NYC skyline. You can also buy drinks and snacks, from the bar on the boat. Plus they have a toilet (unlike Times Square Ball Drop). Just make sure to get your winter coat, and stay warm!
  • NYE Fireworks in Prospect Park: Enjoy amazing fireworks with the background of beautiful NYC skyline at Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Just make sure to RSVP.
  • NYE Celebration and Fireworks at Coney Island: Coming into its fourth year, guests can dance to live music throughout the night and watch some of Coney Island's most notable side show performances. Enjoy a fireworks display at the stroke of midnight at this free family-friendly celebration. Free live entertainment begins at 9:00 p.m. at the Steeplechase Plaza. Free admission starts at 6:00 p.m. on the B&B Carousel. And a lot more. Enjoy!
  • Hang around Times Square (SECRET TIP!): You may not be the "IN" crowd, being inside, but you can walk close to the celebrations, like around 40th Street, or 50th Street, on Broadway or 7th Av. You can go to a bar or pub, or just hang outside around midnight. You can hear the noise, you can somehow hear the music, and still be part of the fun from outside. Better than standing in the crowd, in cold, for hours and hours. And you an walk to the center after midnight, and get some pictures (and even claim that you were there!).
  • Just go to a bar/pub/restaurant: That's an easy one, you are in NYC! Go to a bar, pub, restaurant or anything. Most places have some special or something going on for the NYE. Specially bars and pubs. Just step out of house and walk in to any of the places. You'll have a good time. It's NYC!
  • Or just STAY HOME, and watch TV: Honestly, in this freezing cold, it's never a bad idea. That's what I'm going to do. Watch the BALL DROP on TV, or any of the Holiday or New Year's special movies, or Netflix/Amazon/Hulu. There's so much going on, that you can have an amazing time, just at home. And there's social media (Facebook/Twitter/Instagram etc etc) to connect with your friends and family, as you celebrate and welcome the New Year's.

HAVE A WONDERFUL NEW YEAR'S EVE AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR 2018!

New Yorkers Speak Out About Press Freedoms

Persecution of writers and journalists abounds in our society, including the murder of 11 people at French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo by two Al Qaeda terrorists for their cartoons of Muhammad; the jailing of Newsweek journalist Maziar Bahari in Iran for his involvement with The Daily Show; and the torture of Raif Badawi, the founder of the internet discussion group Free Saudi Network, who has been sentenced to 1,000 lashes and 10 years in prison.

Several New Yorkers have collaborated to raise awareness about these and other examples of how writers, journalists and cartoonists suffer at the hands of extremists and also democratic governments with surveillance programs, including the United States.

Creativity Is Risky: Free Speech in a Charlie Hebdo World is a multimedia e-magazine featuring original reporting, personal essays, an interactive map on press freedoms, videos and music. It tells a story both sad and hopeful about the state of free speech around the world.

“Creativity Is Risky is designed to educate and engage people around the world on issues related to free speech—from violent threats to the more subtle, everyday challenges,” says Manhattan resident and publisher Sally O’Dowd.

O’Dowd’s Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn teammates include:

  • Communications executives Jon Porcasi, e-magazine producer and graphic designer; and Marian Berelowitz, who provided editorial guidance and served as copy editor
  • Emmanuel Letouzé (Manu), a French cartoonist and development economist, who analyzes Charlie Hebdo’s mission
  • Katy Glenn Bass, deputy director of free expression programs at literary human rights organization PEN American Center, who provided insight on the adverse impact of government surveillance programs on writers
  • Singer-songwriter Chaz Langley, whose songs relate to the magazine’s themes of free expression and resilience of writers who stand up to persecution.
“Our team invites readers to engage in the conversation on this essential human right by using the hashtags #creativityisrisky and #freespeech,” O’Dowd says. “Our team is passionate about this issue, and we want to hear from readers. Crowdfunding for MFA, in pursuit of the American Dream

The story of a young girl's pursuit of the American Dream through crowdfunding...

Tuition fees in American Universities, hit (and often pierce) the roof. Ivy League schools are generally ranked amongst the best universities worldwide and usually accept a tiny percentage of international students. So what would happen if an Italian talented girl, in her early twenties, got accepted by one of these colleges, but couldn’t be able to afford it?

Her creativity would run to her rescue. Since the digital era is characterized by projects or ventures that can be accomplished by raising monetary contributions from a large number of people via the internet, why not use crowdfunding to invest in education?

This is how Federica Belletti - a twenty-four year old from a tiny town in Italy called Monte Urano - intends to pursue her American Dream. She has been accepted for the extremely prestigious and selective MFA Program in Creative Producing at Columbia and she has started her campaign through GoFundMe to raise the required $80,000, to grasp the opportunity that is being given to her.

Federica is no stranger to the New York, since she spent a year as an au pair in a New Jersey family to improve her English, and whenever she had the chance she would commute to the Big Apple to follow all the film events in town. She is adamant in the way this experience would be life changing for her: “This institution offers me a variety of opportunities that I would never dream of in Italy. I would actually have the chance to bring to my hometown a know-how that is currently lacking,” she explains.

Federica quotes the Italian cinematic masterpiece by Giuseppe Tornatore to exemplify her situation, “In Cinema Paradiso Alfredo tells Totò «Go away and never come back» and Totò leaves Sicily and accomplishes himself in Rome. Nowadays New York is the place for budding filmmakers.” In her video message she explains thoroughly what Fede’s Mission For Columbia is all about. Donating money for a young dreamer’s tuition fees means investing in the future, and as one of the Founding Fathers of the land of the American Dream - Benjamin Franklin - once said “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”

Manhattan Holiday: Vespa in the City

How to ride a Vespa in New York City, just like in Roman Holiday...

April 23rd marks an important birthday for Vespa, who can enjoy her last sixties. Sixty-nine years ago aeronautical engineer Corradino D’Ascanio presented to the world the most iconic Italian scooter, that according to industrialist Enrico Piaggio looked like a wasp (now you know what Vespa means in Italian), and is now part of the permanent collection at MoMA.

From 1946 to today (almost seventy years later), Vespa is the utmost glamour scooter model, made legendary by Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn riding it through the Italian capital, in ‘Roman Holiday.’ Have you ever thought of evoking that magic in the Big Apple? Well, apparently someone in Central Park did! The NYC Vespa tours transform a normal tour into a scenic adventure with your experienced and skilled vespa tour guide driver. You can pick half-hour tours or one hour tours and you will cover the City’s most famous landmarks in and out of the park. These include the Carousel, the Dairy, the Balto statue, Summerstage, Strawberry Fields, the Dakota building, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Rockefeller Center, Times Square and Lincoln Center.

But if you want to pick your own itinerary and be the one driving the scooter be aware of certain precautions. Be sure to find a spot that is away from people’s blind spots and road hazards, one that gives you the maximum ability to accelerate, decelerate and change directions as needed. Traffic in New York can become over hectic, but don’t be intimidated. A good way to get a car to give you space behind you is to sway the scooter under you. Also try to wear the best safety gear, we know you want to look glam like Princess Ann and reporter Joe Bradley on that Vespa, but you’ll be more appealing if you make it all in one piece. Better safe than sorry, right? So using a pack protector in the City is a good idea. If you wear something or do something to the Vespa that will catch people’s attention it’s going to make it less likely for them to hit you. Perhaps also a colorful helmet could help. We all know the rules have changed since the 50s: helmets are obligatory when riding today.

Finally and most importantly have fun, look all over the place and take in all the beauties New York has to offer...don’t forget to watch also the traffic lights! You, the Vespa and your amore, are sure to have the time of your life experiencing the “Manhattan Holiday.”
