The 2019 Tribeca Film Festival runs April 24-May 5.

The Apollo covers the rich history of the storied performance space over its 85 years and follows a new production of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me as it comes to the theater’s grand stage. The creation of this vibrant multi-media stage show frames the way in which The Apollo explores the current struggle of black lives in America, the role that art plays in that struggle and the broad range of African American achievement that the Apollo Theater represents.

The Apollo Theater is internationally renowned for having influenced American and pop culture more than any other entertainment venue. The space has created opportunities for new talent to be seen and has served as a launchpad for a myriad of artists including Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5, Luther Vandross, Dave Chappelle, Lauryn Hill, Jimi Hendrix, and more.

The Apollo is about so much more than just music, it’s about how we used music and art to lift ourselves out of oppression,“ commented director Roger Ross Williams.  “The story of the Apollo is the story of the evolution of black American identity and how it grew to become the defining cultural movement of our time.  I was fortunate to make my first film with HBO and I am thrilled to be coming back home with The Apollo. Premiering at The Tribeca Film Festival, at the Apollo Theater in Harlem is a dream come true.”

“The Apollo Theater is a symbol of the creative spirit of New York and beyond, and I’m very happy that we’re kicking off our 18th Festival celebrating it with this documentary from Roger Ross Williams,” said Tribeca Co-Founder Robert De Niro.

Amy Berg’s “This Is Personal” to Screen as Documentary Centerpiece;

9th Annual Festival Takes Place February 28 - March 3, 2019

The Athena Film Festival (AFF) at Barnard College announced today its film slate, including opening night, closing night, and centerpiece films, as well as additional programming for the 2019 festival. The ninth annual festival, co-founded by the Athena Center for Leadership Studies at Barnard College and Women and Hollywood, will take place February 28 to March 3, 2019, at Barnard College in New York City. AFF showcases films, television and content that tell the extraordinary stories of fierce and fearless female leaders from all walks of life. Stories of ambition, courage, and resilience amplify the voices of strong, bold women, curating a public discourse on gender equality, and changing the cultural conventions surrounding leadership.

The festival will open on Thursday, February 28, with the New York premiere of “Fast Color.” The film, directed by Julia Hart and written by Hart and Jordan Horowitz, stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw as a hero forced to run when her superhuman abilities are discovered. Years after abandoning her family, the only place she has left to hide is home. Lorraine Toussaint and David Strathairn co-star.

The festival will close on Sunday, March 3, with the New York premiere of the documentary “Knock Down The House,” directed by Rachel Lears, and featuring NY Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The film centers on a young bartender in the Bronx, a coal miner’s daughter in West Virginia, a grieving mother in Nevada, and a registered nurse in Missouri, as they build a movement comprised of insurgent Congressional candidates who challenge powerful incumbents. One of their races ultimately becomes the most surprising political upset in recent American history.

The festival’s Documentary and Narrative Centerpieces were also announced. The Documentary Centerpiece, “This Is Personal,” is directed by Amy Berg, featuring Tamika Mallory and Erika Andiola. While the 2016 election catalyzed the Women’s March and a new era of feminist activism, Tamika and Erika have been fighting for their communities for years. Their stories expose the fundamental connection between the personal and the political, and ask, how can intersectionality birth a new social justice movement? The Narrative Centerpiece, “Out Of Blue,” written and directed by Carol Morley, will have its U.S. premiere at the festival. Patricia Clarkson stars as Detective Mike Hoolihan, who is called to investigate the shooting of a leading astrophysicist. As Mike tumbles down the rabbit hole of the disturbing case, she finds herself grappling with cosmic secrets that may hold the key to unraveling the crime, while throwing into doubt her very understanding of reality.

“We are thrilled to announce our phenomenal lineup of films for this year’s festival,” said Melissa Silverstein, co-founder and artistic director of the festival and founder of Women and Hollywood. “The Athena Film Festival’s goal is to showcase the diverse work of women leaders, and this year, we have some incredible films and stories that aim to change the narrative and highlight important topics.”

The festival will feature a curated program of narrative, documentary and short films, including: “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” directed by Marielle Heller and starring Melissa McCarthy; “On The Basis Of Sex” (2014 Athena List Winner), directed by Mimi Leder and starring Felicity Jones and Armie Hammer; “The Favourite,” directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone; “Jinn,” written and directed by Nijla Mu'min and starring Zoe Renee; “The Miseducation Of Cameron Post,” written and directed by Desiree Akhavan and starring Chloë Grace Moretz; “Rafiki,” written and directed by Wanuri Kahiu; “On Her Shoulders,” directed Alexandria Bombach and featuring Nadia Murad; “Whispering Truth To Power,” directed by Shameela Seedat and featuring Thuli Madonsela; “Worlds Of Ursula K. JENNA ELFMAN, CASSIAN ELWES, KYRA SEDGWICK, AND OCTAVIA SPENCER PARTICIPATE IN “WOMEN BREAKING BARRIERS: WHERE ARE WE NOW?” PANEL HOSTED BY THE HOLLYWOOD FOREIGN PRESS ASSOCIATION

Courtesy: SundanceTV

Today, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) hosted a special “Women Breaking Barriers: Where Are We Now?” panel at the SundanceTV Headquarters, moderated by HFPA member Elisabeth Sereda. Panelists included accomplished women and men from various fields in the film industry including Jenna Elfman (Golden Globe-winning actress), Cassian Elwes (Award-winning producer, “Mudbound”), Kyra Sedgwick (Golden Globe-winning actress), and Octavia Spencer (Golden Globe-winning actress and producer). Sundance Institute’s Executive Director Keri Putnam and HFPA member Silvia Bizio opened the panel with a brief Q&A followed by an HFPA announcement that the organization will continue to show support to the Sundance Institute’s Women’s programs by donating $50,000. To date, the HFPA has donated $100,000 to this program.

During the discussion, panelists spoke about the progress made in the last year and how to continue the momentum moving forward towards gender parity in the industry.

Spencer, who has expressed gratitude to Jessica Chastain in the past for making a stand for equal pay, said today, “We need advocates and allies in negotiating.” She continued, “When I was negotiating my deal for Madam C.J., Lebron James had to intervene. We need all of our male counterparts to be in the fight with us.”

Continuing on the topic of men joining the conversation, Elwes spoke about the learning curve in Hollywood and relayed an anecdote from a recent conversation with a lawyer negotiating on behalf of a male co-star during which the lawyer was fighting for his client to make more than his female counterpart. Cassian received a round of applause after explaining that the conversation concluded with Elwes stating,” I have two words for you, man, Time’s Up.”

Sedgwick ended the panel with a message to all women in the entertainment industry.  “Women always have to work harder than men because we’re in a patriarchal system. So, we have to work harder.” Sedgwick added, “If you’re in a woman in power in Hollywood right now and you’re not reaching down and pulling up another woman, you’re f*cking up.”

For more than 25 years, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has donated over $33 million to entertainment related charities, scholarship programs and humanitarian efforts. Grant recipients of the HFPA fall in four major areas: nurturing the development of young artists in film and television through support for scholarships, fellowships and education; preserving the culture and history of motion pictures by supporting film preservation; promoting cultural exchange and understanding through support for major programs and exhibitions that utilize film to ignite critical dialogue; and supporting special projects, educational and cultural activities connected with the entertainment industry. The HFPA began giving grants as early as 1989 to institutions such as University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), University of Southern California (USC) and the American Cinematheque, which continue to receive support today. The HFPA has created endowments at Los Angeles colleges and universities to help underserved students such as Los Angeles Community College and California State University, Northridge.

Licensing fees obtained from the Golden Globe Awards® has allowed the HFPA to support over 80 nonprofits focused on these pillars as well as journalistic organizations committed to freedom of speech and organizations that support natural disaster relief and other international and humanitarian crises.

About the Hollywood Foreign Press Association

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) was founded in 1943 as the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association (HFCA) by a group of entertainment journalists representing world media in Hollywood, who realized the need to unite and organize to gain the recognition and access to studios and talent accorded to the domestic press. All qualified journalists were accepted, with the bold goal of “Unity Without Discrimination of Religion or Race.” A year later, the HFCA created the Golden Globe Awards which, to this day, the entire membership selects, votes on and awards every year for outstanding achievements in motion pictures and television. Members of the HFPA represent 56 countries with a combined readership of 250 million in some of the world’s most respected publications. Each year, the organization holds the third most watched awards show on television, the Golden Globe® Awards, which has enabled the organization to donate more than $33 million to 80 entertainment-related charities, scholarship programs and humanitarian efforts over the last 25 years. ‘PROGRAMMERS OF COLOUR COLLECTIVE’ LAUNCHES AT SUNDANCE 2019 | POC2 members

Members from a new collective of film festival programmers comprising people of colour, women and TSLGBTQ+ made their first public appearance together last night at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah. Having already confirmed 85 members, POC2 (Programmers of Colour Collective) aims to stimulate conversation around the underrepresentation of people of colour within film programming and international film festival staffing, but also to act as a catalyst for transformative change towards a more inclusive international programming pool.

Set against the snow-filled backdrop of the Park City festival hotspot ‘Timbers Bar’, many of the recently formed collective’s members assembled for a group photograph: a symbolic first step in a push towards a greater representation of diversity at film festivals’ curating and green lighting tables.

Those in attendance included founding members Paul Struthers (Director of Exhibition & Programming at Frameline), Hussain Currimbhoy (Programmer, Sundance)and Lucy Mukerjee (Senior Programmer, Tribeca), as well as other influential industry figures including Cameron Bailey (Artistic Director and Co-Head of Toronto International Film Festival), Loren Hammonds (Senior Programmer, Tribeca) and Gina Duncan (Associate Vice President – Cinema, Brooklyn Academy of Music). The photo was accompanied by the publication of a full list of the collective’s current members. Spanning five continents and counting among its ranks festival and industry programmers from a diverse range of film festivals, the nascent collective’s list shines a light on a growing generation of such programmers who are calling for a greater recognition of the inclusion of their perspectives.

Spurred by the many cases of (unconscious) bias in film festival selections that are gender-imbalanced, lack representation of people of colour or else portray them or other underrepresented groups in a way that is inauthentic or culturally appropriative, the collective’s objective is for programming pools, and therefore the films selected for festivals, to become truly diverse.

The collective chose to launch at Sundance where, contrary to the norm, diversity is the order of the day in the programming room. POC2 will strive for such inclusivity to become ubiquitous with curating films.

Next steps

The primary aim of POC2 is not only to stimulate a conversation around the lack of programmers who are people of colour at international film festivals, but also to be a catalyst for transformative change towards a more inclusive international programming pool.

Ultimately, the primary objective is to make festival line-up themselves more robust, reflective of international audiences and richer through inclusion.

The Founding Members (listed below) issued the following statement:

“As a collective, we’re forward-looking and focused on connecting people with opportunities. Whilst we seek to diversify the current festival programming pool, we also want to create a network of new talent from all of our communities that feeds into those pools and creates its own programming activities. We want to be a portal where other collectives with similar interests can connect with us, offer advice and who we ourselves can advise on festivals, programmers and films. Essentially, we’re a new door into the industry for other POC groups and filmmakers.”

Founding Members:

Paul Struthers FRAMELINE Director of Exhibition & Programming

Lucy Mukerjee TRIBECA Senior Programmer

Hussain Currimbhoy SUNDANCE Programmer

Themba Bhebhe EFM Diversity & Inclusion

Initiatives

POC2 advocates for studies, research and statistics on the composition of the international film festival programming pool to provide data on equality gaps within the industry.

Through mentoring schemes, generating greater awareness on the profession of film and industry programmers as well as outreach to universities and schools, POC2 will create pathways for POCs, those belonging to underprivileged socio-economic backgrounds and underrepresented groups more generally.

POC2 will also create an internal database and online repertory of POC programmers.

To maintain momentum and remain interconnected, POC2 will also organize regular gatherings and themed events at major international film festivals.

Upcoming events

A panel organized by POC2 due to take place during the Berlinale (Berlin International Film Festival, – Feb. 7th – 17th) is currently in the making.

JOIN INTERACTIVE CAMPAIGN LAUNCH CELEBRATING LEGENDARY FILM ICON FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA IN HIS 80TH YEAR

The Family Coppola wants to feature your stories, and through community, partnerships and content, reminds its fans in the New Year: You get one life. The biggest risk is to waste it.

Today, The Family Coppola, a global lifestyle brand that represents specialties in wine, film, food, resorts, spirits and adventure, launches an interactive campaign to celebrate creativity, courage and innovation. Inspired by its Chairman, visionary and risk-taker Francis Ford Coppola, this campaign kicks off a yearlong celebration of what he’s created throughout his life. Fans, media and brand partners of past and present will help The Family Coppola build momentum to Francis Ford Coppola’s 80th birthday in April, through unforgettable storytelling of passion and fortitude.

“An essential element of any art is risk,” said Francis Ford Coppola, entrepreneur and six-time Oscar® winning director, when asked about filmmaking. “If you don’t take a risk then how are you going to make something really beautiful that hasn’t been seen before?”

The digital campaign reflects on the risks and rewards of living life to the fullest. From January 24 through April 13, people across the country can visit CoppolaRisk.com and share stories of dreams, courage, sacrifice and risk. Simply log on and upload your brief video to be entered for a chance to win a mystery vacation at one of The Family Coppola Hideaways and experience adventure at a resort in one of five countries. Drawing upon inspiration from Francis’s film career and travels around the globe to the far-reaching corners of the world, The Family Coppola created each luxury property, embracing off the beaten path locations and making each locale an ideal destination for exploring the natural wonders of the area while relaxing in tranquil surroundings.

“The only way to grow is to take risks; get a little uncomfortable. Nothing great happens when you’re complacent,” says Jennifer Leitman, The Family Coppola Marketing EVP. “Innovation, originality and embracing change are deeply ingrained in our culture at The Family Coppola. We’re excited to hear stories of risk from our passionate fans and partners. Who knows what provocative tales they’ll tell.”

For a third year in a row, the Francis Ford Coppola Winery will partner with the Oscars® and Sundance Film Festival to raise a glass to film lovers everywhere and Francis Ford Coppola’s impact on the industry. Sundance Institute recognizes “risk is the unlikely hero that unites artist and audience,” urging the community to Risk Independenceas a theme for its 35th Annual Sundance Film Festival. As the Francis Ford Coppola Winery 2019 official wine designation coincides with the countdown to Francis’s 80thbirthday, The Family Coppola awarded one lucky winner a trip to the Sundance Film Festival through Coppola Rewards, its new program bringing together quality wine, culinary exploration and adventure.

2019 Sundance Film Festival attendees will experience The Family Coppola in a variety of experiences and thought-provoking opportunities that lean into risk. In partnership with illycafè and a host of other brands in and around the Sundance Film Festival, audiences will enjoy premium wine offerings from the Francis Ford Coppola Winery portfolio. The Director’s wines, from superior Sonoma County fruit, celebrate the uncompromising standards of quality winemaking and artistic interpretation through its innovative labels. The Director’s Cut wines, also from Sonoma County, are named for the version of a film that most reflects the director’s vision and its labels are replicas of zoetrope strips from Francis Ford Coppola’s personal collection. The twelve distinctive wines of the Francis Coppola Diamond Collection are made from grapes grown in vineyards across California, from coastal regions to inland valleys.

About The Athena Film Festival

The Athena Film Festival at Barnard College in New York City, is a weekend of inspiring films that tell the extraordinary stories of fierce and fearless female leader from all walks of life – stories of ambition, courage, and resilience. We amplify the voices and stories of strong, bold women, curating a public discourse on gender equality, and changing the cultural conventions surrounding leadership.

Over the last nine years, the Festival has welcomed more than 35,000 people from all over the world to 200+ screenings. This past year we screened 46 films including 17 features, 13 documentaries, and 16 shorts. We welcomed distinguished guests including Billie Jean King, J.J. Abrams, Lena Dunham, Amma Asante, Barbara Kopple, and Bridget Everett among many others.

As a key part of our educational mission, we offer a wide range of programs including panels, workshops and masterclasses for filmmakers, labs for film and TV writers in New York and Los Angeles, and a works- in-progress showcase for female documentary filmmakers.

Our signature program, the Athena List, is an annual slate of between 3-5 screenplays with female leaders that have yet to be made into films. Now in its 5th year, several Athena List scripts have been produced or are in production. For example Athena List finalist, Little Pink House, written and directed by Courtney Balaker and starring Catherine Keener, opened the 2017 festival and was released in the spring of 2018. Athena List winner, On the Basis of Sex, based on the life of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, directed by Mimi Leader and starring Felicity Jones as a young RBG, will be released on December 25, 2018.

As the only film festival specifically focused on women’s leadership, the Athena Film Festival provides a forum for dialogue about and an opportunity to showcase what it means to be a powerful woman today, inspiring women and girls in the process. We engage with community partners to reach diverse audiences and ensure that we are connecting with families and youth in the Morningside Heights neighborhood and across New York City.

IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK

Academy Award-winning writer/director Barry Jenkins' first film since the Best Picture Oscar-winning Moonlight is If Beale Street Could Talk, his adaptation of James Baldwin's novel - the first English-language feature film based on the work of the author, to whom the movie is dedicated.

Set in early-1970s Harlem, If Beale Street Could Talk is a timeless and moving love story of both a couple's unbreakable bond and the African-American family's empowering embrace, as told through the eyes of 19-year-old Tish Rivers (screen newcomer KiKi Layne). A daughter and wife-to-be, Tish vividly recalls the passion, respect and trust that have connected her and her artist fiancé Alonzo Hunt, who goes by the nickname Fonny (Stephan James). Friends since childhood, the devoted couple dream of a future together but their plans are derailed when Fonny is arrested for a crime he did not commit.

Through the unique intimacy and power of cinema, If Beale Street Could Talk honors the author's prescient words and imagery, charting the emotional currents navigated in an unforgiving and racially biased world as the filmmaker poetically crosses time frames to show how love and humanity endure.

LOS ANGELES (November 29, 2018) – The Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced today that celebrated producer and writer Kenya Barris will be honored with the 2019 Visionary Award. Barris will accept the award at the 30th Annual Producers Guild Awards presented by General Motors on Saturday, January 19, 2018 at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles.

The Producers Guild Visionary Award recognizes television, film, or new media producers for inspiring storytelling of unique and uplifting vision or quality to our culture. The Producers Guild 2019 Visionary Award is sponsored by Delta Air Lines.

Kenya Barris is being recognized with the Visionary Award as a trailblazing storyteller whose work has advanced and expanded the representation of diverse perspectives within mainstream media. As the creator of the hit, Peabody award-winning and Emmy-nominated® series “Black-ish,” along with its successful spin-off series “Grown-ish,” and the writer of last summer’s comedy blockbuster “Girls Trip,” Barris has earned praise for honest portrayals of the Black experience that have not only resonated with a broad spectrum of audiences but have continually served as a catalyst for conversations around an array of timely topics. Through his work, Barris has fearlessly tackled difficult social issues, poignantly reflected our culture, and unified audiences through powerful stories that highlight our shared humanity.

“Kenya Barris is simply a fearless producer,” said PGA Presidents Gail Berman and Lucy Fisher.  “Time and again, Kenya has stepped up to tackle the difficult conversations, from the ones we have as families at the kitchen table to the ones we have as colleagues in company boardrooms and network offices.  These are challenging days for many of us, but Kenya’s unique voice—honest, passionate and so very funny—has been one of our industry’s strongest antidotes to ignorance and intolerance.  We are gratified to recognize his inspiring work with the Visionary Award.”

21st Century Fox and American Film Institute Announce Inaugural Class of Fox DP Lab

21st Century Fox (21CF) and the American Film Institute (AFI) have announced the eight female cinematographers to participate in the first-ever FOX DP LAB, to take place today, Thursday, Nov. 8, and tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 9, on the historic Fox Lot in Los Angeles: Tarin Anderson, Anne Etheridge, Catherine Goldschmidt, Halyna Hutchins, Hana Kitasei, Anka Malatynska, Dominique Martinez and Moira Morel.

As part of its ongoing efforts to bring new and diverse voices into the entertainment industry, 21CF designed the FOX DP LAB to increase the number of women cinematographers working in Hollywood. The Lab will connect participants with cinematographers, producers, directors, agents and executives; and provide an insider’s experience on Fox studio films and TV series in production. The participants will visit the set of Fox feature film “Call of the Wild,” meeting with Academy Award-winning Director of Photography and AFI Conservatory alumnus Janusz Kamiński; and Fox-produced comedies “Speechless” and “Fresh Off The Boat.”

Participants of the Fox DP Lab are recent graduates of the AFI Conservatory — the American Film Institute’s filmmaking MFA program, and one of the most prestigious film training programs in the world.

“We’re excited about this initiative to propel female DPs in their careers,” said MyKhanh Shelton, Senior Vice President, 21CF Global Inclusion. “We believe that focusing on increased gender representation in this key role will help accelerate diversity throughout production crews.”
